Vista - First Sound at turn on

OK. This is minor.

Vista preloaded with a Dell desktop. Home Premium.

On turn on, the very first sound, when the round MS logo comes on screen, there is sound/music/tune - whatever that is called. Very short.

Mine has sound/tune but is garbled. Anyway to fix this? Or even change the initial sound at turn on or reload/fix the MS logo sound on turn on?

This is the first, first, first sound that one hears on turn on of computer.

Everything else works flawlessly. All other sounds are good and correct.

Do you have a way to reinstall the sound card driver. If so, you can try this: Computer > Properties > Device Manager > Sound, video and game controller > Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall > Restart Vista and reinstall the sound device driver

This happens when there is a conflict with the Windows Startup Sound and Windows Logon Sound its not a driver problem cause this happened on my machine from time to time and my audio drivers were fine.

To disable Windows Startup sound

Right click desktop > Personalize > Sounds

There is a box with a list of all the Windows sounds and underneath there is a checkbox labelled, play Windows Startup sound, untick it.

I am guessing that this turns it off. Any way to fix the garbled first sound?

Or is it a sound card problem?

Turn the sound (start-up one) off (reboot) and back on (reboot)? Might work?

I would try Ewans idea of turning off the start up sound. Does that help? Also, in the sounds menu you can play the log on sound. If it sounds odd there then it may just be a corrupt sound file. If it is we should be able to attach a copy of an uncorrupted one for you.

Thank you. I think I stated above that I did turn off sound. 3 times. I unchecked the box and checked again, shut down, restart, etc. That did not work. I either had no sound or the original garbled sound.

As far as listening to the sound in that same dialog box, I can't find it. If anyone can be real specific, I will try to listen to that sound in the dialog box. Thank you.

OK, I found the dialog box that has on top: Playback, Recording, Sounds.

One menu in this box has: No Sounds, Windows Default, Windows Default (Modified).

I have unchecked the Play Windows Startup Sound. Restart. Then rechecked it, restart. Initial sound is still garbled.

Is the sound bad/garbled when you test that sound?

If you want to leave the Windows startup sound on you could try turning off the logon sound in the list of sounds by selecting no sound bext to Logon Windows. Same steps as I described above buts in the list of sounds.

Problem Solved.

This Dell Dimension 521 came preinstalled with Vista. This is a Dell refurbished that otherwise works fine.

Integrated video/graphics card.

I just upgraded to a dedicated 7300LE video/graphics card. Problem solved. All works fine now at start up. And the new dedicated graphics card was just plug and play. Vista found all drivers and installation was a breeze. I got card new off an auction site so I was a little apprehensive.

So, thanks to those that had mentioned the graphics card.
