WMP in vista acting up

Hey All: WMP on my vista Ultimate system is skipping like a dirty cd during playback, audio files only(mp3). I`ve disabled show enhancements - no improvement. Always used creative media with my other system but I really like the layout and library of WMP. So I`m stuck here. Vlc is disappointing, media player classic doesn`t run all that well. I`ll try media monkey. Anyway has anyone come across this trouble and if so = a solution.
