You can purchase an Acer Aspire One with Linpus Linux Lite installed and with a Solid State Drive (SSD). Don’t know much about SSD other than it’s faster than a regular spinning one, but it also lacks the space. You can get one with a 16GB SSD, but the price will be higher than a regular WinXP with more memory and larger HD. A Linux Acer One with the same specs as a Win XP system would cost you a few dollars less though.

Buy the way, I'm purchasing two of these minis for my daughters; the pink color ones.

Well, I spent eight days traveling from Nevada to a hotel in California and working out of Arizona; a time zone nightmare. ..Not even my cell phone could keep track of the right time.

Anyways, my mini laptop served me well all that time. I used it to watch movies, browse the internet and complete my reports. Had problems connecting to the wireless network at the hotel in California, but once I moved to a different room it worked just fine…found out later that I wasn’t the only one having connection issues. I like the built in camera; I used it to send pictures home.

Suggestion to anyone considering buying this mini; get the 1GB RAM, not 512MB. The laptop can be upgraded to 1.5GB, but the upgrade requires taking the laptop apart. This could be a challenge, even for experience PC techs. One GIG of RAM is more than enough, especially when running Win XP. If running Vista, a ready boost flash memory will make 1GB of RAM just right.

Cyber Monday (December 1st) is just around the corner. It refers to the Monday immediately following Black Friday, which is the kick-off of the holiday online shopping season in the US between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. Black Friday is associated with traditional stores, while "Cyber Monday", as the name implies, it’s for online for online retailers to attract customers. That will be the perfect time to buy the Acer Mini (or any other Computer or Laptop) at a reduced price.

These minis are great for travelers that want to tag alone their files, as well as movies and other entertainment media. It works as well as any other laptop and it is easy to carry around. While on my flight from Las Vegas I watched the movie “Cars”. I ripped the movie on my PC with English caption, so the woman sitting next to me was able to watch the movie also. Afterwards she asked me about the Acer One and told me that she wanted to get one for herself because it’s not just a computer, but because it could replace her mini DVD player as well.

These minis are very affordable and make the perfect gift for anyone, from students to business people. I love it.

According to TigerDirect.com - Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Components & Electronics, included in “the 10 HOTTEST CYBER MONDAY DEALS” (Based on customer response) was the Acer Aspire One, which came in as # 5 for a price of $349.00US. This version has a 120GB HD and a 3-cell battery though, as opposed to the one I purchased which has a 160GB HD and a 6-cell battery. By the way, the $349.00US has been the lowest price I seen on other site as well, including Amazon and Newegg. Some sites do offer free shipping or no interest payment for a limited time, or $1.99 shipping as TigerDirect.

It’s been a while since my last post. I’ve been at Magic Valley, TX, close to the Mexican border, since Nov 28 and working 12/7 almost daily; or nightly since I’m working the night shift. So far, my now trusted Acer One has done its job; from helping me keep track of my reports, to browsing the internet and doing my Christmas shopping. By the way, today is Christmas here in the US. This is the first Christmas I spend away from home, but I was able to buy gifts and sent them home just in time. I told my daughters to set the speaker phone while they un-wrap their gifts at midnight; they both were very happy.

As for the Acer One, one thing I miss is the big screen to watch movies. It’s perfect to watch movies while flying, but while at a hotel, I prefer a larger screen. I may get an adapter later on to connect it directly to the TV though. I did have to disable the “hibernate” function because the screen would not come on when resuming from it. To get the screen back, I had to close the lid again, wait until it went to standby and then reopen the lid. I’m pretty sure it’s a driver issue, but don’t have the time to mess around with it right now.

The three USB ports have come on handy. I use one to connect the laptop cooler, one for my USB drive, which I need to carry my reports back and forth, and one for my Magic Jack VOIP phone system. I use the Magic Jack to save my cellular minutes. I paid $59.00US for five years (less than $12.00US a year) and get unlimited long distance calls to US and Canada. I simply connect the Magic Jack to the USB port and the hotel phone to the Magic Jack and it’s good to go.

The built-in webcam has become handy as well as I get to send pictures home. I’m always cleaned-shaven at home, but when I travel I go for weeks without shaving. Every other day I take a picture of my face as my beard grows and then I send the picture to my wife; of course she always tells me to shave it off before getting home. The webcam resolution is just about 1.3 pixels, but the pictures are of enough quality when sending them over email. I also save the pictures to SD card so maybe one day I can show them to my grandkids or perhaps even my great-grandkids.

For those who are interested or curious about getting a mini notebook, you may want to read this article from CNN: The under-$400 'netbook': Tech's savior - or sorrow? - Dec. 24, 2008

I like my Acer, but must agree that I miss the larger screen, so I ordered a 17" WUXGA Gateway Laptop running Vista Home Premium with an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26G with 1066MHz and 3MB of L2 Cache, 1GB Memory NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS, 320GB 7200 RPM HD, 4GB DDR3 RAM, DVD Super Multi, Gigabit LAN and WLAN, 5-in-1 Digital Media Reader and a heck lot more; should be here on Tuesday.

My wife will be using the mini, mostly to make international calls. Since it’s so lightweight, she can take it anywhere around the house while calling wirelessly. She uses JustVOIP to make international calls for about $15.00US every six months. As for the Acer Mini, it’s a great internet computer and the 160 GB HD has enough storage for most users. It’s not a gamer by any means, but it has enough power and storage for college students to carry around. At about three pounds with the power adapter, it’s just perfect to carry in a backpack, plus you can’t beat the price.

You're right about the many comps, but my goal was to fix my Jeep Cherokee, but that plan was derailed when I began working...just didn't have the time. Now the wife is driving my Cherokee, so I figured since I'm working hard might as well buy myself something. I like the specs on my new to be laptop and I think it'll be fun, plus I'll be able to take Win 7 on the road during this trial duration.

A G-Card would be nice, but I don't think I'll be needing it for now. So far the hotel's Wi-FI have been fast enough to keep me busy.

Tried Win 7 on the Acer One, but encountered some issues with the network adapters. The wireless adapter worked sometimes and sometimes it didn't, the LAN adapter did not work at all. Win 7 did not install any native drivers and the drivers from Acer did not work. Everything else worked just fine and fast, even the Aero theme worked. Will try again when I get back from my trip.

Formatted and reinstalled Vista on my new Gateway Notebook. It's the easy way to get rid of all the "junk" that comes with new PCs. One can uninstalled most of these software of course, but there are always traces left behind, including files, folders and registry entries. This Gateway came with a nice program designed to backup the recovery partition, as well as drivers to discs, including the program needed to run the recovery partition. I saved the discs, got rid of the recovery files and now I have a 10GB partition to keep my MP3 files and more.

Went to Las Vegas and traveled with my new Gateway Notebook. The biggest issue I had before I left was finding a case for it...it's a 17" notebook, but the real issue is the battery. It protrudes from the notebook so finding the right case is not simple. When I ordered it I also ordered a case, but returned the case because the laptop didn't fit inside. I opted for a shoulder bag from Targus, which is big enough and have plenty of compartments to carry other accessories. Anyways, the Gateway has plenty of power and it's just fast and plays movies in HD...I like it.

I do miss the Acer One portability though as it's so light compare to the Gateway. The bad news is that I lost the Acer One to my wife. She doesn't use a computer often, except to make international phone calls. With the Acer One she can move around the house without any issues while still connected wireless; the battery last for up to four hours, so she can take it outside and still be able to talk for sometime taking advantage of low international calls. Anyway, this Acer is one super mini notebook, the price has come down some more and I recommend it. It’s not a power PC, but has everything most PC users need.

I guess the reason for installing Vista would be that you would like some of it's features on the laptop.

It's been a while since I post about the Aspire One. Today I decided to install Win 7 RC on this little notebook and would like to report that it worked just great. I ran the Win 7 upgrade advisor and according to the report it needed a host controller driver. I didn't find one from the Aspire One page, but got one for an HP computer and it did the job. So far, so good.
