Thumbs up

Hi everyone. I'm finally getting to know my way around Vista on my own new computer and so far I really enjoy using it. The changes in the interface, like the removal of the "Add/Remove" programs from the Control Panel was interesting when I wanted to get NIS out of my system, but within a very short time I was uninstalling it by following the written headings and instructions. If one takes the time to read, the directions to the tasks become evident. I love Areo, and agree that it does use a lot of video RAM, but the effects are gorgeous!
I did install my own favorite browser and e-mail app, and they installed without a hitch. I love the mahjong and the chess games! I did need a driver update, but that's to be expected. I'm still new into this experience but as of now I give Vista a solid thumbs up!!!:newbie:

The one thing that Vista is not too good at is during boo and shutdown, even Vista SP1; too slow for my taste. Shutting it down is not such a big thing as you can always walk away before the process has ended. However, a few seconds during the starting process can sometimes feel like an eternity.

As most know many of the "patches" from MS are to detect or try to detect Pirate Versions. This has added many seconds to the BOOT time.. it also has added to the SHUTDOWN time.
==================================================
If your SHUTDOWN time is really slow you might try this:
Here's a neat one I fell over somewhere on the web:
Open Regedit (WINDOWS KEY + R on your keyboard, or by clicking Start and typing on the search bar "regedit" without quotes. Hit Enter

Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l] On the right panel look for the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" string and change it value to 1000 by right clicking the string and selecting Modify...

Default Value WaitToKillServiceTimeout=20000 (equals 20s)

Modified value WaitToKillServiceTimeout=5000 (equals 05s)
Modified value WaitToKillServiceTimeout=1000 (extreme, use it at your own risk)

I found 2000 worked nicely for me but try the 5000 first.
--------------
As Admin you also can view all that is running in startup...you can also DISABLE then one not needed.. such as Nero scanning to see if its legal, and many other programs do this... called phone home..(disable it-then STOP) your admin and have the power...Media Player does it search for sharing (disable it-then STOP) I have found about 10 that are not needed... you have to do your own.. Your ADMIN. learn to use Admin Access to( Disable then STOP).
If your afraid to do this... then BUY a Good 3d Party Program which will DISABLE then STOP un-needed crap..

One issue that has not been cleared when using the regedit to decrease the time the PC takes to shutdown, is whether or not this can lead to data corruption or loss. The reason been is that during shutdown, the OS makes sure all programs and files are properly shutdown. If forced to shutdown prior to completing all its function, it could display errors later on.

I think the issue with Vista taking longer than XP to start and shutdown is inherited within the OS. Perhaps this one of the reasons requires larger resources.

I hate, that Vista is not willing to run Steinberg Clean and Wavelab lite.
But at least, I found some Vista compatible software, able to replace both applications.
Well, Vista asks me always stupid questions but since this video I smile a bit about Vista.
