You won't get the download indication if you have not installed the prerequiste updates. I recommend using the standalone installer available at MS downloads anyway.

It could be a driver issue. If you have an incompatible driver, then your probably won't see it through Windows Update. I'd still try installing the standalone and dealing with the driver issue afterwards. Here is a read that provides some info on the driver problem.

Installed SP1 last night as well using standalone installer. I have a Dell E521 and before I could install SP1, I had to upgrade my sound card driver. After that.....no problems....PC seems brand new again....let's see how long that will last!

So why does MS give this ominous warning?

"DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download is available on Windows Update."

I cannot see SP on Windows update either even after reinstalling Windows a couple of days ago AND applying all the latest updates. Oh well. Downloading SP1 now as I type...

MS doesn't want the download site tied up. I would get and install the standalone updater, although doing so will take more time.

Well I took the plunge...in for a penny, in for a pound.

SP1 installed without a hitch! Will report back if any issues, but non so far.

Information Week is reporting that the University of Pennsylvania has advised users to forgo the Service Pack 1 update that Microsoft recently released for Windows Vista. Citing numerous problems encountered by users following the update,

The school’s Information Systems & Computing department said it will support Vista SP1 on new systems where it’s preinstalled, but added that it “strongly recommends that all other users adopt a ‘wait and see’ attitude,” according to a newly published department bulletin.

Well one positive thing I've noticed is that Vista SP1 uses a bit less RAM. Down to 37-38% on a fresh reboot from around 44% prior to SP1.

That said, the amount of disk space usage has gone from just under 9.0GB to 10.8GB!!!! Oh well...you win some, you lose some...
