| Win 7 Tips I think we can start a Windows 7 Tip thread to make this OS more interesting and help others with this new venture. Remember Vista's Windows Mail? Well, it's not available in Win 7. Microsoft has been pushing hard for Windows Live to be its primary mail handler. It's fast, easy to use and offers many features, including 5GB of free space...and, of course, it's free. You can download Windows Live Mail from: Download details: Windows Live Mail (Version 2008)

| Change Background Tire of keep changing your background? Let Win 7 do it for you. You can select your own picture collection or select from Windows default backgrounds to create a slide show and then select how long you want each picture to be displayed. Right-click your Desktop > Select Personalize > Select Desktop Background > Use the Browse button to find your pictures or use Windows Desktop Background > Select the Items to be displayed or Select all > Make your selection under "Change picture every: > Under "Picture position:" select the best view for your pictures > Check or un-check "Shuffle" (your option) > Click "Save changes".

| Uac Don’t like the way the UAC behave? It’s very simple to change it! Click the Start button > Select “Getting started” > Change UAC settings > Slide the “Bar” up or down depending on your preference. Note: Click the “Tell me more about User Account Control settings” link to learn more about it and the best setting for your PC.

| Thanks for the info, just ordered a new drive to use for testing in my one system. I wonder if there will be any promotional chances from Microsoft to get a free copy of 7 in the future, like they did with Vista. I got Business Vista for free and the Office 2007 from those promotions last year. Sounds like 7 is what Vista should of been, can't wait to try it once I get the new drive.

| If you dont like the way Windows 7's new taskbar displays icons and no text labels then you can bring them back by doing the following: Right click start button > Click properties > Click the taskbar tab > Change taskbar Buttons to never combine or combine when taskbar is full. You can also make the icons smaller and the taskbar width by clicking us small icons.

| Just Ultimate This beta comes in one flavor only...Ultimate. Installation is quite simple and the two choices are either Upgrade or Custom Installation. The upgrade option only works if the PC is running Vista however. You can install from within Windows or by booting from the DVD. Custom installation will give you the option to format the HD and then proceed to the installation...formatting is quick. You can dual-boot by simply selecting the Custom Option and selecting an un-use partition. Or you can chose a separate hard drive and use Crabby's suggestion; disconnect the main HD, install Win 7 and the re-connect the main HD. You'll then chose which partition you want to boot from.

| Like I previously mentioned, Win 7 doesn't incorporate an email client, but you can download and use Windows Live Mail, which is an excellent email handler. Downloading and installing Windows Live Mail is simply easy: Click the Start Button > Click the Getting Started link > Select "Get Windows Live Essentials" > Will take you Online > Click Download > Select the Program(s) you want to install

| Why did you have to restore Vista in the first place? Did you installed Win 7 on the Vista partition and then uninstall it?

| needed to validate photoshop CS3 so I had to de-register it in vista And to gain back a validated copy I restored a registered version so I can use it in both versions but after having restored there was no boot option for windows 7 until I did a repair from the DVD the next time I am in vista I will make a fresh backup so the problem will be overcome in the future I have put acronis 11 on windows 7 But have not tested it yet I will be doing so soon as all my main programs in and working just one or two smaller ones as I remember them installed rocket dock most of it works at least the bits I use is the side bar fully functional on your computer its working slightly different in 7 and I cant find the icon to toggle it on and of also not many gadgets yet the met office weather gadget does no work and quite a few others but they will come soon I'm sure still very impressed this time its a shame this is what vista should have been like in the beginning I built this computer to run 64 bit just as vista was released and its taken all this time to get it to function properly now I hope the manufacturers bring the software up to speed to go with it |

| I can un-hide my Vista HD, but I prefer to keep it hidden to keep prying eyes away from it. I also like Crabby's idea of disconnecting a HD when dual-booting; it works well, especially with SATA drives, which the boot up sequence can be easily setup. On another note; I heard comments from some users having problems getting back to Vista after trying to remove Win 7. I'm not sure if the Vista DVD Repair Option would help as I have not try it; of course, one can edit the BCD, but it can be complicated for some. There's a quick way, which will not remove Win 7 entry from the boot sector, but will get users back to work fast if they decide to remove Win 7 in a dual-boot configuration. Basically, once a user installs Win 7, go back to Vista and instruct it to boot up first. Also, setup how long you want the boot up option to appear before the OS boots. Here's how: Once Win 7 is install, boot to Vista > Right-click Computer and select Properties > Click "Advanced system settings" > Under "Startup and recovery" click Settings > Under Default operating system, select Vista > Check "Time to display list of operating systems:" and enter a value of seconds (Default is 30 seconds) Note that from Vista you can access Win 7 partition and can delete it or format it, which will get rid of Win 7 of course. If that is the case, uncheck the "Time to display list of operating systems:" box and your PC will boot to Vista automatically every time.
