Will Win 7 be a concern for businesses? When Vista arrived in the horizon many businesses decided not to upgrade from XP because of concerns about hardware compatibility issues. Now that the final version of Win 7 is around the corner, it appears (judging by the beta) that most of those concerns with hardware issues are no longer a justification. However, at least for the beta, upgrade from XP is no longer a choice. Those businesses still running XP will either have to upgrade their PC to Vista SP1 before upgrading to Win 7 or perform a clean installation or purchase new PCs. How will that play in the decision on whether or not upgrade their PCs to Win 7? Better yet, how many of those companies may decide to jump to Linux instead? I wonder!!!

Felix when you say the Vista partition is hidden, you cannot see any files etc. I am thinking about dual booting, but on a separate hard drive. I wonder if I be able to see the other two drives in my system, and can you start the install from within Vista like you could do when vista cam out and was using XP and dual booting. It has been a while since i played around with any dual booting and not sure of myself at this time.

Garry, the issue with the hidden partition was and installation issue. It only happened once and as of today I don't know why it happened. As far as starting the isntallation within windows, it is basically the same as Vista, at least for this beta and that includes dual booting. If you dualbboted Vista and XP, you shouldn't have any issues with Vista. Please keep in mind that you cannot upgrade from XP to Win 7. Also, to upgrade from Vista to Win 7 you must have Vista SP1 installed.

I did an upgrade from Vista to Win 7 64Bit RC last night. It's working like a champ. Be aware though that an upgrade can take a pretty long time to complete. In a way that is good; Microsoft wants to make sure the upgrade is done without a hitch and not with all those errors associated with a Vista upgrade.

My windows experience index:

Processor, Memory (Ram), Graphics and Gaming graphics is 5.9. Primary Hard disk is 5.8. By the way, this is my Gateway laptop.

just a note about Win 7 upgrade. I began to upgrade my dekstop. I inserted the disc and chosed upgrade then left the PC alone. When I came back the PC had started and indicated that the "Boot Manager WAs Missing". I'm running a SATA and EIDE hard drive. To continue with the upgrade I had to eject the DVD and restart the PC; this allowed for the upgrade to continue.

I simple solution, but one that might become an issue if the user does not eject the DVD and belived there's a problem with their PC.

If you are running Vista on your PC, you should be able to run Win 7, but if you are running other OS, you can use the Win 7 advisor (beta) to test your machine. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

You can compare the different version of Win 7 by visiting: Which one is right for you?.

Like Vista, the Win 7 version that appears to give the most for the money, for most users, is Premium.

Don't know if this will apply to everyone, but you can pre-order Win 7 upgrade at a very discount price. Some of the websites shown even ship the item for free and with no taxes. Note that this is a pre-order and Win 7 won't be available until October, but the price is just right.

Win 7 will be officially available October 22. There will be six different variations: OEM, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. The two versions gear towards the general public will be Home Premium and the Professional Edition. A non-Internet Explorer version will be available for European countries.

Like I mentioned previously, you can pre-order an upgrade version of Win 7 at a discount: $49.99 for Home Premium and $99.99 for Professional. That’s for U.S., Canada and Japan residents. U.S. and Canada residents have until July 11 to place their order, while Japan residents have until July 5.

After July 11 the price for Home Premium upgrade will be $119.99 and $199.99 for a Professional upgrade.

Here are some of the specs to run Win 7.

• 1GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
• 1GB RAM (32-bit) / 2GB RAM (64-bit)
• 16GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20GB (64-bit)
• DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

You can download this PDF file from Microsoft that provides you with a comparison of Win XP, Vista and Win 7. Please keep in mind though, it's from Microsoft and they want you to get into the Win 7 bandwagon. Download details: Windows Client Feature Comparison for IT Professionals

Like mentioned before, Win 7 feels faster than Vista. When you click on something, it executes the command quickly and without hesitation. This Beta is the Ultimate Version and the installation took just over 13GB of HD space. One thing I noticed, I'm dual-booting it with Vista and, for the moment, the Vista partition has remained hidden. Hopefully, this is a security loophole that's been considered by Microsoft. When dual booting Vista and XP, for example, one could log on to Vista and view files on the XP partition, and that, at least to me, is not a nice thing to have as anyone can view your private files.
