Thank Buster on your tip concerning Experience Index. Attached are my experience index for my 32 Bit PC. You'll know which one is Win 7 because it provides "...on scale of 1.0 to 7.9" just above the Base Score. As you can see, the Vista index score are higher than in Win 7. Both OS are the Ultimate version.

Note: Had to post the Win 7 index score at the next post because of limitations on file size by this network.

Had to re-edit this post again. The file size allowed here is 19.5, too small to make the snip I took readable...here are the numbers for both Vista and Win 7.

Hardware...................Vista..........Win 7
CPU...........................4.3.............4.3
MEM..........................4.6.............4.7
Graphics (desktop).......5.9.............4.9
3D.............................5.4.............4.9
HD.............................5.9.............5.4

If were talking preformance one of the things that Microsoft are saying is that Windows 7 will run better on lower spec machines such as netbooks.

I decided i should give it a try on one of my older machines and see how it handles.

I must say i was plesently surpised to see that it ran great on an machine that is getting on a bit. Its allmost as if Windows 7 knew it was an older machine and worked around it. With full aero and settings i managed to get a great running OS on a:

Intel Celeron 2.6ghz Single Core
1gb of DDR 1 Ram
AGP Geforce FX 5200

Your post get me the idea to install it on my old Inspiron B130 laptop. It has a 1.50 Celeron CPU and 2GB RAM; nothing else is fancy about it. It was running Win XP Pro at a very low speed; let us see what happens. I started the installation at 11:40 US Central Time and so far it's still trying.

I started the installation booting from the DVD, selecting "Custom Install" and the format drive option so it doesn't create a windows.old folder.

Note that the upgrade option from Win XP is not available; it can only upgrade a Vista machine. Don't know if that will be the case when the final version arrives, but I imagine the option will be available.

Installation completed at 11:10 or 30 minutes. It works just fine and, like many have reported, faster than XP or Vista. It recognize all drivers except for the Video Controller, however, I use the update driver automatically and it went online, found and install it. Will try the index experience next and will post the results.

Attached is my Win7 Index Experience. Not great at all, but the same as when it was running Vista. However, it's surprisingly fast, as if Win7 has adjusted itself to the PC's hardware capabilities.

This is great news, i think one of the reasons people took a disliking to vista was because it didn't run great on there systems, problem solved in Windows 7 i think.

Got my laptop and will install Win7, but will wait until I receive the software discs from Gateway. The PC came with a recovery partition, but I'd rather have the discs, including Vista. Anyways, here are some of the specs and a snip of the index experience under Vista.

OS: Vista 64 Home Premium
CPU: Intel Centrino 2.26GHz 1066MHz FSB 3MB L2 Cache
RAM: 4GB DDR3 Dual Channel
Video: NVidia 9800GTS 1GB GDDR3
Webcam: 1.3
HD: 320GB 7200RPM
DVD: DVD+RW Super Multi Drive with Dual Layer
Card Reader: 5-in-1
Networking: Intel Wireless WiFi, 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N, 10/100/1000 Ethernet Card
Ports: 3 USB, 1 HDMI, 1 VGA, 1 E-SATA, 1 IEEE Firewire

Thanks, Buster. I love it. I just got in touch with Gateway and they'll send me a copy of Vista. To all who buy a PC from top manufactures; you should insist they send you a copy of the OS. Even though most come with a recovery partition, if the partition is damaged you may be out of luck.

To Airman, are those Win 7 specs? They look darn good! Did you build that PC?

64 bit Win7 and yes I did build the one in my sig. I am not happy I screwed up labeling the disc's and installed the 64 instead, of the 32bit. I might do a 32 bit install tomorrow, just to see the difference. So far mine is running stable not to many issues, except with trying to install 32 bit software on a 64 bit system . Yes I have 500gig of storage in this system and have 2 other systems in the house I build plus one very similar for my bro in law.. The one 7 is installed on is the media center pc hooked to 46 inch Sony. I also jut got a 32o gig WD AAKS Blue in hope of getting 7 when it is released.

I did a clean install of the 32bit like I was suppose to and got the same index 5.2, and it went smooth a silk not like the 64 bit the other day which could of been my fault.
