Vista gaming problem

Before I reinstalled Vista to clean off all of my files and restoring to a completely clean version of Vista, I was able to play games like Battlefield 2 and Counter-strike. After i performed the reinstall, I got extremely low FPS during game play. My game configurations are the same as they were before. After I reinstalled Vista, I did have to update my NVIDIA driver. Could it possibly be that I need to update a driver? If not, then what can I do?

i find that defragging your hard disk helps because when you install games they go all over the place and most games recommend that you defrag to improve preformance.

EDIT: Also its better to get Nvidia drivers from Nvidia and not the ones from Windows Update, just incase you updated your driver from windows update

I have no issues here. The new Nvidia drivers have a PCI-E patch to increase performance... when installing you should see the screen go black and some wierd music crochets appear... then it will revert to your desktop.

I have a GeForce 7600GT PCIXpress and have used the drivers provided with Vista. If I install the drivers from NVIDIA, will there be an issues with Windows updates?

I don't know much about drivers or what to do, so some specific help would be appreciated. In device manager:

Display adapters: NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers: NVIDIA nForce 430/410 Serial ATA Controller
Network adapters: NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller
System devices: NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management
NVIDIA nForce System Management Controller

which one do i update? and how?

Also, i'm not sure if this matters, but my system was originally Windows XP Media Center.

Do you know what make and model your motherboard is? Either way... all the drivers you need can be found on the nvidia website (http://www.nvidia.com). If you can't find all you need just reply and I will link all the stuff you should need

I would update using everything that NVIDIA offers for your card--especially Vista items--beta or otherwise. You may find no more needing updating than the driver and maybe the control panel.

All the above advise is very good...
I have had problems with the NVidia downloads .. if all else fails. go thru uninstall every thing in reference to you VIDEO card..
Yes, Uninstall ... your system will still run.. then REBOOT... Vista will install "Vista Drivers.." in most cases this will solve your Video problems.

Thanks everyone for the good advice. I went through several different updates. I don't know which one is the newest or what, but some of them said they couldn't find any compatible drivers, and some of them installed. After i performed the update, I ran the Windows Basic Experience base score thing and whichever one gave me the highest score I stuck with that. unfortunately my highest score for graphics was 2.4 but it still runs good so it's fine with me. I am also defragmenting my hard disk which has been going on for several hours now. Was what I did not a good idea? Snuffy, just wondering but how does uninstalled NVIDIA work and what exactly would I have to uninstall? There are several different NVIDIA things in the device manager.

Uninstall "EVERYTHING" in the system under VIDEO... uninstall everything simply tells Vista to reinstall the DEFAULT Drivers, and then if Vista has any update/upgrade drivers.. it will install them...
Other wise DEFAULT and no drivers from the NVidia site... then see if your games work correctly... many times all the nice upgrades are not signed...
and OS's simply do not like unsigned drivers....

Now go to control panel ->system->device manager and uninstall all and display adapter & VIDEO stuff...
then reboot.. and let Vista reinstall the default drivers... then play your game.. the MS installed v97.46 drivers work GREAT for me... the NVidia website v97.46 drivers CRASHed my system... I have tried the v100.41 NVidia drivers an my 3d Memory-Video Graphics hunger games.. plays like crap...

By doing this, will I be able to install the NVIDIA stuff again if I wanted to? If so, then I will definitely try it out.

No, I have no idea what a motherboard is. :o I know it's sad. I know it has something to do with a computer though.

Also snuffy, one more question. If I go to device manager, under the sections that say batteries, computer, disk drives, etc... which ones exactly do i have to uninstall. And do I have to uninstall the whole section? For instance, if you want me to uninstall disk drives, I have to uninstall everything under disk drives, such as Toshiba MK blah blah blah, and WD 16000BE, correct?

The fact that you don't know about computers is a bit scary I want to know your motherboard chipset so I can get you the correct drivers for it. You should be able to find out from your manual etc... if not you can look at the device manager or install 'everest' from lavalys and find out
