Clean Install - driver problems

Hello

I hope the readers and contributors of this forum can help me. I upgrade a couple of months ago from XP to Vista Ultimate.

I recently downloaded updated vista drivers for my Canon MF5630 printer and it all went horribly wrong - the drivers won't install and I can't rollback to where I was when the printer worked, albeit intermittantly. Canon have been extremely helpful but have concluded that my problem is caused by upgrading to Vista rather than doing a clean install and previous drivers preventing new ones being installed. They've helped me delete alltraces of the previous drivers, but I think I messed it up and now I'm getting all sorts of driver errors (universal bus driver not loaded & windows needs to install driver software for your usb controller. Canon suggeted doing a Clean Install now - so my questions are :

- How do I go about it. Do I uninstall Vista then start again with a clean install?
- If yes - what do I lose in terms of files etc by doing this?
- If I do a clean install am I going to have problems re-activating vista
- If I do it, will it sort my drivers out or is there Is there any other way I can sort them out?

I'd appreciate any help,but please I'm not a techie

You can use System Restore to roll back your PC to a previous point when it was working. Click Start and type System Restore and click Enter. Select 'Choose a different restore point' and click Next. Select a restore point from the list.

Welcome Pauline. We are glad you are here.

If what felix suggests does not work, then I would do a repair intstall--i.e., run the Vista installer from the DVD after starting up to Vista on your hard drive. Then, I would try to work the driver issue out.

Also, personally, I would change my user name to something other than your email address.

Hi Pauline,

The above all sound like good advise.
but the first thing I would do, is open control panel, Program and Features, then uninstall the printer, if your printer is like mine and not listed in there,
go to printers and fax, change the default , then delete the printer...
go back to c:\programs find your printer directory and DELETE it, every bit.
shut down, wait for 2 min(s), then restart, making sure the printer is plugged in, hooked up - what ever. Vista should find it and install Vista Default drivers, if it is Vista approved. (test to see if it works). If you still have problems let us know.

Thank you all for your replies. I do't how I managed to set my user name as email address - google autofill I think - now changed!

This is my current situation

I cannot do a restore - it just errors everytime.
I've deleted all the canon drivers from the C drive, but I think I've got a more fundamental problem with my drivers than that - everytime I log on my system comes up with a found new hardware message and then 'windows needs to install driver software for your universal bus controller. It then errors.
I also get an error saying 'Set up dienum device interfaces returns code 259' and 'virtual bus driver is not loaded' I have no idea what these mean.

Also when I plug in other hardware such as my blackberry and my other printer it cannot find the drivers.

There are updated canon mf5630 drivers on the canon europe website

(I'm in the UK) but they just wouldn't install on my system which is again why I now think I have a more fundamental problem. It was the guy at Canon that suggested I do a clean install, but if I have a more fundamental problem will that solve it?

Help- I'm stumped and printerless so struggling to work

Your issue is much more than a printer driver. Follow Znod's suggestion and do a 'Repair' install. Most people suggest disconnecting or turning off all attached devices before a clean installation. I have follow MS suggestions; turning on or connecting all your devices, and Vista has been able to install all drivers without any issues. I suggest you install or turn all devices on before proceeding, but that's up to you.

To do a "Repair' installation do the following: Make sure the PC is connected to the Internet > Start your PC > Once the PC has Started, insert the Vista DVD and begin the Installation > Let Vista download the latest Setup files when prompted > Select the Upgrade option and follow the instructions.

Note: Your PC monitor may go blank for on a few occasions during the installation, but don't be alarm, let it finish. It might take more than an hour, depending on your system, but the instalation should be fine. Better yet, once the the installation begin, walk away.

Normally the UBC is located on the Mobo CD which contains all the default drivers. When it ask for the drivers point towards your mobo CD or you can insert the CD and install all the default drivers that way...

You should also open control panel, system, device manager, give permission and look for any "yellow caution markers" delete them one at a time, click refresh, with the mobo CD inserted, make sure it looks in that CD for the drivers...

once you have NO YELLOW caution markers, plug in the canon printer, and see if Vista will locate and install the needed drivers, if NO then continue to the "link" you indicated and download and install those drivers...

Mobo(Motherboard) CD. Every Mother board manufacture sends a CD with all the required drivers for the hardware and chip sets on the Mobo (motherboard) the Lan drivers, modem drivers, Universal bus drivers, USB drivers, etc etc.

Now if you bought your computer from Dell, HP, Gateway, Radio Shack, AST, ACER, they also send you a "Installation CD" to insure you have all the required Drivers..

if you want to truely wipe you hard drive clean, look for a bootable floppy disk with a drive space program that will format in ntfs....most hard drive manufacturer website have programs for free download...hint I know the seagate website has one, i use it.

one other thing these are usually used in bootable floppy disks, its the only reason I still have a 3.5 floppy drive around. This will leave you with an absolutely blank hard drive to install windows from, and windows never truely reformats a hardrive, it tend leave a few things behind.


ive found reformating and reinstalling is quite often the easeist way to fix a problem...so long as you regularly back up anything up you dont want to loose.

Thanks for you help everyone - I ended up doing a complete restore and then a clean install with Vista and Office 2007 - everything is working like a dream apart from one little problem with my user accounts which I will post in the appropriate forum
