Sata problems

Problem

I had Windows Vista installed on my Sata HDD, but I was going to go back to Windows XP, as far as I know a driver is required to install Windows XP onto a SATA drive but I am having no luck finding one, so I decided to go back to Windows Vista again.

The motherboard is a Microstar MS-7168

When I installed Vista things were looking promising my PC looked as though it was copying the files over to the hard drive but after its first reboot it came up with the message...

Disk read error
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot...

I know that Hard Disk is not faulty because I used the Ultimate Boot CD diagnostic tool on my Hard Drive and I can access the files on that Hard Disk.

If anyone has any sort of solution, please give advice because this problem is giving me massive headaches.

I had this happen once with my install I did a full format instead of a quick when it asks the drive i want o install on and click advanced options i believe and mine went right through the second time I tried installing Vista

Hi ewan. I have installed both 32- and 64-bit Vista on Raptors. I did not have to do anything special about drivers. I have had trouble getting Raptors to work before. Perhaps the Raptor issues generalize to other SATAs. I have a third Raptor that my system can't see, although it used to see it under different circumstances. I have not had time to solve the problem. As airman suggests, I'd try to install again.

Okay, I fixed the error but I installed XP onto an older IDE drive, it'll do just now, but thank you guys for your replies, but it was really wierd, I did a full format and everything and still nothingm what's wierd was, it wasn't until i took out my SATA drive until i could get Windows installed on my SATA, I reckon there was a conflict somewhere.

I still have not found a reasonably easy way to get my errant Raptor initialized/recognized--well, except for one way I don't want to resort to. I can't believe that Western Digital still has not come up with even a set of Beta tools for dealing with Raptors while running Vista.

Okay, I'm back to square one again, I want Vista on my PC and its doing the exact same thing again, as we speak my PC is doing a low level format to destroy all the data off my SATA hard disk, the error message disk read error has appeared again while trying to do an install of Windows Vista, I took the Hard Disk down to the PC store I got it from and they think its something I'm doing wrong, they said I need to download the SATA drivers for it to work after explaining that I have had Windows Vista on the same SATA drive before WITHOUT having to download any SATA drivers.

I do have an IDE drive, but I really want to use the SATA again for Windows because I found it to be much faster than using IDE. Again answers are greatly appreciated.

The issue was that your motherboards BIOS was looking to boot from the wrong HDD, and was not automaticaly checking other drives. This can be fixed simply by changing the boot priority in the BIOS menus. Glad you fixed it, and sorr I didn't see the post earlier.
