Question AMD64 FX-55 vs Dual G5 ???

I would like to know if someone knows if a single AMD64 FX-55 system would be faster than a Dual G5 system?

Of course running Linux

It depends on the task. That is very general question. If you only have a single threaded application, than the amd64 will be faster but if you have a multithreaded application or multitasking alot, then the g5 will be faster.

With the g5 you get osx which is really cool with. If you can afford the g5 I would get it.

Many linux apps have osx versions that are compiled for osx and work with the X. There is even a gentoo portage tree for osx.

edit:

Missed the thing about linux.

As for running linux, they should be fully compatable. Yellow dog is a major player in linux compatability and ppc. Gentoo is also an option. In general, having two processor is better than one.

yes there are, tyan has released a dual Opteron SLI NForce4 board, for high end workstations. have no idea of the cost however, i suspect that the g5 system will probably be similar in price since it a high end workstation.

This will the board I be getting if I start a computer science course next year.

The race for quality has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

The nForce duallie: http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8we.html

But why stop with a mere duallie? http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merch...egory_Code=OMB

The beauty with the new nForce Professional (nForce4 derivative) is that it's modular. You can add chipset units pretty much the way you want to, as they all use HyperTransport. Two southbridges? Go ahead. Three? Fine...go nuts. From what I've read, it's a beauty.

Look at this http://www.barefeats.com/macvpc.html

These tests are worthless since it doesn't include dual opteron and Athlon FX.

Shame on them.
