Completly helpless Linux n00b! :)

Ok, I am typing this from an Overclockix Iso. I booted from it and it is a self contained o/s on a cd. It is very nice, but I am very lost.

The first thing I want to do it install this on a partition and have a dual boot. But I can not figure out how to do this. geez I am such an idiot.

Any words of encouragement?

first to do is to work out what partitions u have and where they are, you will need a /boot, / and swap partition.

Swap should be twice ur ram and /boot should be about 100mb-150mb i say, /root is a bi as u like (i.e. holds all the stuff on ur of the OS includin prorams and stuff)

/boot should be formatted as ext2 or 3 and / can be formatted as ext2, ext3 or reserfs.

best to read everythin about partitionin and hardisks and bootloader and then installation instructions.

sorry for the spellin but the letter after f dont work on my k/board.

Well, I got it installed. I wasnt sure what filesystem to format as. The first time I chose XFS? that didnt work, so I chose ext_2, this time it worked. But for some reason, as I set up the password for the Knoppix account, then the root acount, it would not let me log in the default path. I did manage to get in there. Then i was stuck as a blank screen. Lol, after searching for a bit more, I did figure out how to start the KDE.

I am still totally lost, as the learning curve is extremely high for a life long windows user.

I enjoy fiddling with it, but it's really hard trying to do anything. About the only thing I can do is surf the net.

My sound card is not working as well.

Thanks for the tips lucas_maximus.

it alright, XFS i think is for SGI machines.

i would install something like mandrake, or something similar or suse is well spoken of.

ext2, is a filesystem is gettin old, but it would work perfectly fine.

XFS was orgionally made by sgi, but I use it on my p4 system with no problems. XFS is much faster than ext2 and it seems to be much more stable espically in the newer 2.6 kernels..

XFS is recommended for large files storage.

You can use ext3fs or reiserfs for the partitions in Linux. GRUB will now boot from reiserfs.

does anyone know of a good link for Linux n00bs?

I must admit, I can't even install a program.

I am trying to get my soundcard to work, but when I type the command \proc\pci, I get a access denied message.

What am I doing wrong here?

To access all of that you need to be logged in as root. I believe you are tring to see how linux sees your sound card. If that is the case, "lspci" is what you need to type to see what you have installed.

P.S. I consider myself a great resource to a newbie. I don't mind if you ask a million questions on this forum. I will be happy to answer a many as I can.

Ok, be careful what you are asking for.

When I boot up, it gives me the option of logging in as root, or I guess the user knoppix. So for me to see if my soundcard it recognized, I will need to type the coomand lspci? Ok, I will be back when booted into Linux.

Try 'more /proc/pci' - I'm not at a Linux box right now but access denied could be for another reason. If /proc/pci invokes a program then access denied would be related to user level security for the app. However, if the more command worked and shows you readable text then running /proc/pci would be like running \readme.txt in Windows. In other words a program is needed to do something with the file like c:\notepad.exe readme.txt is similar to more /proc/pci. Note that if you get unreadable text then a command is needed in the front of the /proc/pci to invoke the program or it might simply need a dot to run it, like this: './proc/pci'

This may be a bit long. But see if you see anything wrong here. I have used to command 'dmesg', and it has outputted this LONG bit of text.
