Red face Configuring suse

I know I could had used the search feature, but i'm looking for specifics on my hardware.

Right now i'm in suse 9.3, all devices ARE functioining, just NOT how I want them.

At this current moment now I'm getting the media packs which should fix my problems with DIVX, etc etc.

I also am trying to figure out how to PROPERLY set my sound card up. I have logitech z-5500 speakers and an m-audio revolution 7.1 which suse seems to find. I am only getting stereo sound even though I set all the DAC'S to 100, I do not know why. M-audio says I can get 3rd party drivers from opensound.com, but I am lost there too.

Last, but not least, I want to have my mx1000 be put to it's full potentioal and use the 3 extra buttons on the rocket to the left of the mouse that don't work now. Why? Becasue I use them constantly in windows for back and forward while browsing.

Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance my best friends.

P.s, Congrats Skully, We all love you =).

Oh, and I did search linux qusetions on the 1000 and it all seemed like gibberish to me, i'll try my sound card next though. It does recgonize it's a mx1000 though.

For my mouse, there does seem to be hacks, but I have no clue where to begin. For my sound card, the alsa projects recommended multiple times, but I don't know what I need for it. My card is ENVY24. Others also get mono problems / 2 channel like me.

Packman is your friend

My understanding is that to get full multimedia on SuSE you go to the packman site and download all the stuff you need, replacing the sometimes crippled SuSE versions with the packman versions - xine, kaffeine, etc. You will also need things like W32codecs to play different AV streams. You may also need a special one for DivX - I wouldn't know as I don't use it.

Anway, this has always worked here, though I am only up to SuSE 9.2.

You can add packman to your list of sources if you use apt-get. I believe you can also add it as a YaST/YOU source, though haven't investigated.

To install this, do I go into a terminal and type apt -get something something or?

Not exactly. Apt-get is an alternative packaging system not officially supported by SuSE though many people use it. If you are just starting out, perhaps best to forget it. In that case, you will need to go to packman, download the rpms you want to a directory on your hd and then install them by hand.

However, I would suggest doing a bit of googling first. Try looking for, say, xine +9.2 in the alt.os.linux.suse group on usenet.

As I said, I don't use SuSe 9.3, as I am still on 9.2. It's possible that things have changed in 9.3 though I rather doubt it. On 9.2, the xine player was crippled out of the box and it was necessary to install the packman one (together with libdvdcss2) to watch DVDs, etc. In order to do this, I had to force the removal of SuSE's xine package and then install the packman one. I had to force the removal because an ordinary attempt to delete the stock SuSE xine failed, citing numerous dependencies. The packman package re-fulfils all the dependences so it all ends up OK, but for a new user it might seem a bit forbidding I guess.

Thanx! Will check it later. I bought a book on linux, but it just tells you stupid stuff and not terminal cmds. A dummies book actually which usually are good, but it just taught me the interface of some distros which I didn't even bother reading.

There is a thread somewhere, from swannema, how to add packman to your YOU server list. Then you can simply update your xine, codecs, etc. via Yast Online Update.

Hope this helps.

Greetings

Dru

P.S.: He also had a link to how to configure your Logitech mouse and keyboard correctly, that wasn´t too complicated to follow i think.
