FreeBSD 4.6 is out

For those of you that want to try a true Unix OS instead of an Unix-like OS like Linux, FreeBSD is a good one to try. Much easier to install than Solaris 8 . Plus, I like the mascot-cute little devil.

BTW XFree 4.2.0 is now part of the standard FreeBSD installation.

milesc3,

There is a GUI front end to FreeBSD. That's the XFree86 package that pointreyes mentioned in his post. That program is the most common "behind the scenes" code for most things GUI Desktop related on *NIX systems. You then select a window manager to run, which helps you lay out how your windows look, behave, and other desktop appearance matters.

I'm not sure if there's a GUI front-end for the setup portion of the OS though.

The OS installation is very much like Linux Slackware. A text based installation that is very easy to follow because it is menu driven.

I guess sounded a bit too serious when I posed the question guys, I was kinda acting like "Joe Consumer" when he says if it isn't GUI and pretty he doesn't want it. I'd love nothing better than to find a very functional operating system that meets my needs, I really don't care how pretty it is. I still like DOS if that tells you anything.
