Pointreyes,

Did you write this article?: http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=5428
Notice how he says that even with the nVidia drivers he couldn't get OpenGL working. So, I guess OpenGL needs some more work on their 64 bit libraries.

Man, you have an Opteron? I am so jealous. I was tempted until I heard that the 939 was coming out. But by the time the 3500 came out I was already on my P4. Maybe next time.

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/..._10454,00.html
shows that it's in the kernel, so I'm surprised SUSE9.1 didn't compile correctly.

Is your BIOS update here?: http://www.lsilogic.com/downloads/do...o?product=2249
Scroll down to the SUSE9.1 section.

In the case of my i850 when it got to the part where it asked me to install from the CD or through the net I told it to get all the updated packages from the net. It went out and got everything fine. Maybe I'll wipe this install, swap it into the PBZ and try it again, but this time downloading all the updated packages from the net (semi-ftp install).

I just wish that I could take a snapshot of how beautiful Firefox looks under GNOME (I don't like KDE). It is somewhat like WXP (window border in semi transparent blue) except with ruby red scroll bars and rounded buttons. The one thing I am forced to do, for the moment, is right click copy and control-v to paste. But the fonts look so much cleaner than through Windows that I really hate giving it up. Now if I can only get that "Nature" theme to install right.

As for the ATI drivers, SUSE 9.0 and 9.1 will install but I have to install the ATI drivers to get past 800x600.

GRUB Error 17 gone.

Well, I just fixed my GRUB Error 17 problem.

I removed the caddy from my i850 box, installed it into my i875 box, and said, "what the hell, let's power it up and see what happens".

And it started to boot.

It gave me a Phase 1.5 error notification but it kept booting. It complained of my BIOS' acpi having a problem and to deselect PNP OS in the BIOS.

So I disable it, and tried it again. Now it seems that I have to assign IRQs. But what really irks me is that in the PBZ BIOS I cannot turn off S1 (shaded grey).

But... I didn't have to install the ATI drivers, my MX510 works perfectly (I always have it connected to the PS2 port because of Linux), and the internet connection was used to do an 'update from the net' before the whole system came up.

So, I'll play around with it a little more, then partition it so that I can restore my W98SE, assign IRQs and then see what happens.

I really like Ubuntu. Just because the ATI driver was installed, X Window came up and asked me what res I wanted (1024x768), I didn't have to give it any refresh rates, I didn't have to mess around with XFree86 mouse settings, and for the most part everything seems to be working as a good distro should.

You can get a print screen using GIMP if some of the other printscreen utilities are not installed. Yeah, I have a dual Opteron. My diagram link in my sig lets you know everything I have. I'm a bit on the extreme side of things.

Then again, I'm using one computer for Oracle 10g EE, another with SQL Server 2000, another for the client (Access 2003), and then the Solaris box for the file server. I also happen to have Firefox running on Solaris. I'm starting to like Solaris more then Linux-yeah, I'm a strange fella.

Sorry, I didn't write the article. My job is keeping me very busy lately-hence the reason why I'm actually working with what I just mentioned on the previous paragraph.

Yeah, I have the latest SCSI drivers. Not quite sure what to do because I really want SuSE running on the Opty box because that is my main Oracle box and SuSE has some of the best Oracle support on the web. I might have to invest in SLES9 but that $350 per year is a rather high price tag for me right now. So, I currently run Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition on the box (I have a very good relationship with Microsoft).

I can take a snapshot but I have nowhere to host it from. Maybe qwest.net has a place where I can put it.

Do you mean that seriously or figuratively? I saw that the driver is named linux-2.20.2-1.zip. For a second there I was asking myself if this meant that it was for a 2.20 kernel.

btw, until I change around my mouse mappings, I have found that depressing mouse button 3 will paste my right-click copy.

Not quite sure what to do because my time is currently severely limited. e.g. I have another box here that I have not been able to complete the installation on due to my workload. I cannot afford to do anything to my Opty box because it is needed for the current Oracle work I'm doing on it. I can't afford the time it takes to get SuSE running on the box along with getting Oracle on it at the risk of not completing other tasks that are very serious work tasks (it only affects aircraft in Oregon, not a big deal ).

You might be able to take a snapshot and make it smaller in size for uploading onto ABX. I have qwest as well but fortunately my ISP is not not qwest so I at least have a web site to host some of my print screens. Like this: http://members.dsl-only.net/~pointre...ces_expert.jpg

I'm not sure if place like imagestation still exists for posting images.

hey I got it working! I reinstalled mandrake on a seperate harddrive on the onboard controller. The 60Gb is on the promise controller and so far doing nothing. However the o/s seems to be able to access the drive so I was going to attempt to format it. I want to use it mostly for hosting files for apache2 and proftpd. So if the format is successful (it may not be due to the promise controller...more on that in a minute) where should I mount the 60GB drive at?

About the Promise controller...I think its working...can't be sure yet. I discovered that there is a promise raid controller that had a driver in redhat (since version 7.2 I think.) The promise card I have and the raid card share the same chip
Hopefully it'll work. If not, I'll try the highpoint again.

Why, on a mount point, of course.

Pointyreyes, can you walk him through it? - I'm too tired to think.

what is it?, you create a directory in the /mnt directory, like /MyData, then 'mount /dev/sda0 /mnt/MyData' ? I can't think about modifying fstab...

By the way, Jorell, I was going to ask you what the chip was (if it is an embedded like chip like on the Asus mobo); I was thinking that it was a Promise Ultra ATA100 TX2 module.

Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Thanks!
The chip is linked in my previous post...but yes, you're right I believe those two share the same chip.
I'm thinking I should mount it as /var The reason I think that is because I have two directories there: /var/www and /var/ftp
The mandrake utility can format it and copy all files there for /var so it should be easy. (No, I don't know what I'm doing)

The problem I'm trying to figure out now is why I can't get it to pick up an ip and dns name from the networks dhcp server. I've reconfigured it a half dozen times...I'm beginning to wonder if the built in firewall isn't blocking it or something. Oh well off to the mandrake site to find out.

Fortunately, there are plenty of example of the fstab to assist with determing the proper layout of entry in the /etc/fstab file. This link should be of help for you.
http://www.humbug.org.au/talks/fstab/fstab.html
The big thing to remember is the location of the /var partition. If you are using more than one partition and if so, if you are using extended partitions then that can change the location of the 'device'.

e.g. The break between primary and extended partitions also count for a device location so a person cannot assume that if they have two partitions that they are sda1 and sda2 because sda2 could be the extended partition area and sda3 would be the actual partition within the sda2's extended partition.
