How to install 3'200 Adobe Type 1 Fonts in SuSE 9.1 Pro

I have Adobe Font Folio 9, which includes over 3'000 professional Adobe Type 1 Fonts.

These fonts can be used in Windows OS as well as Mac OS.

Question: can I install these as well in Linux? And if so, how and where?

This might not work, but I would go into the control panel and click on the area to setup fonts (i forgot which one it is under, but I think it is near the bottom). I would either enter administrator mode or be logged in as root and then install the fonts and test if it will work.

Another way which might be esier is to go into the xfree86 config file and add the directory of the fonts, but this must be done in the command line. Then just restart x and you will know if it worked or not.

The font installer is under system administration.

swannema, this is about TrueType fonts (by Microsoft). Those over 3000 fonts however are Type 1 fonts (Adobe), used in the Graphics Industry (mainly Mac OS systems and Postscript engines in Printers, but also Windows with Adobe Type Manager ).

I'm sure I can use them with Linux, just don't know how.

Not sure, it depends on the format of the fonts on the cd. Some of them can be installed and for some you might have to install the Adobe software. Did you try to install it with Wine or download a trial of crossover office and try if you can install the Adobe software. I can't try it at the moment, even so I have the Adobe software from work, I am away from home the next 2 weeks but I will try when I am back.

swannema, I'm not in a hurry. So, enjoy your trip and take care of yourself. Look forward once you're back how you succeeded in installing Font Folio in Linux.

Would be a great advancement for me!

I tried to install the Adobe Font Manager and it installed with crossover office but wouldn't run properly.
You can still install all the fonts with the font manager in Yast. It just takes very long, but you can select all fonts that are in one folder to be installed.

If you want to install the fonts just for OpenOffice:

browse to your home directory
open the openoffice folder
now open a terminal and type
./spadmin
In the pop up windows select fonts
now add and then just browse to your cd.

Some of the fonts look fantastic in SuSE. Minion is one of my favorits. It works very well with Opera, which has become my favorite browser in SuSE. Firefox is not 100% stable in Su 9.1

swannema, I just could not find that font manager in Yast. I installed the program type1inst, which is for installing Type1 fonts. Are you talking about the same?

yeah, that's what I thought and I also found that one in Control Centre. I was looking in Yast, as you indicated.

Strange, the Font Installer show two TT's, which stands for True Type. But indeed it also installs Type 1 fonts.

Thanks for your feedback!

I also used that utility ./spadmin in OpenOffice.

Very weird to start a program with ./ (dot slash). Do you know of any other program, which one has to start with ./ (dot slash)?
