well, i for one think that 64 bit on the desktop is pointless at this second. Most applications are not optimised for the 64bit desktop, and some important things just don't work period. When things are written to take advantage 64bit, i might start using it on the desktop, but for now 64bit is only really useful for the server/workstation market. I even have a legal XP x64 license i don't use for the same reason.

for me it is a ton of hassle for zero payback

Run 32 and 64 bit at the same time. Due to the apps I run I don't really see much difference between the choices.

Mainly running Fedora Core 6 64-bit
Used to run Debian 32-bit but haven't used it in a while since Debian is giving me major GUI problems and the whinny developers will not provide a final release of Etch.
