***! I am starting to get ticked off here. ATI console says the driver version is ATI 3.14.1, but also that openGL is MESA still. *** again? I had absolutely no errors installing the drivers, or editing my xf86.conf file by adding load "dri", etc. I have rebooted since then, restarted x several times, and still no luck. My FPS running glxgears is only a sh*tty 144fps.

Okay, looks like you try to build your own kernel modules and that failed.

Donīt you use the standard kernel? If you have compiled your own kernel once, and you knew/understand what you are doing, there should be no problem for you installing the drivers.

Anyway, did you do this?

Downloading the driver rpm and the kernelmodule rpm from suse site.

Installing the driver using:

# rpm -Uhv fglrx*.rpm

Install the kernel module sources using:

# rpm -Uhv km_fglrx*.rpm

Configure the kernel sources using:
(Before you can do this, you should make sure your have the latest (standard) kernel installed (You can use YOU for that or download them manually, installing via YAST) and that the right kernel sources are installed (again, via YOU or manually and YAST) and make and gcc

# cd /usr/src/linux
# rm -f .config
# make cloneconfig
# make prepare-all (only for kernel-source >= 2.6.5-7.75)

remove kernel module sources using:

# rm -rf /usr/src/kernel-modules/fglrx

Compile the kernel module using:

# cd /usr/src/kernel-modules/fglrx
# KERNEL_SOURCE=/usr/src/linux make modules
# KERNEL_SOURCE=/usr/src/linux make install
# depmod -a

Then you configure X11 using:

# sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx -b /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/profile/firegl

And Enable 3D support by editing /etc/X11/XF86Config with your favorite editor (do you know how to use vi? can also use kedit)

and adding

Load "dri"

to the Section "Module" in that file.

And you are done.

Fglrxinfo should tell you that everything is alright.

Slovak, looks like your kernelmodules arenīt loaded (or someting like that). I think i had the same problem before. Thereīs another thread about installing ATi drivers in LInux, where swannema told me the right way i believe.

Greetings

Dru

I have been working with swannema on this over in the suse forums for the better part of this week, but to no avail still no 3D for me. I have never compiled my own kernel, just used the one for suse that yast updated, no matter how it is done I get the same results, except this last time I got the dredded black screen after a reboot, which took a sax2 from runlevel 3 to get my desktop back. Why me when everyone else at one point or another can get 3D for ATI going I would rather have a root canal then have to use windows, but without 3D in linux I have no choice since I am an avid gamer.

I have Suse Linux 9.1 Pro and iīve used a Radeon 9800Pro and now have a X800Pro running with it.

It has to be possible to solve your problem.

This here
"When I do this # KERNEL_SOURCE=/usr/src/linux make modules, I get this
make -C /usr/src/linux modules SUBDIRS=/usr/src/kernel-modules/fglrx
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.5-7.108'
Makefile:438: .config: No such file or directory"

Looks like you donīt have the Kernel sources installed. Get online quick and download and install them with YOU and YAST. Or download them manually and install them with YAST. Be sure to have your kernel updated too.

Explanation:
When you type "KERNEL_SOURCE=/usr/src/linux make modules" make is trying to "make" the modules.
Therefore itīs trying to enter the directoy `/usr/src/linux-2.6.5-7.108'.
and to make the modules using the file ".congfig". But this file is missing.

Possible Reasons: You donīt have the correct kernel sources installed. Or you donīt have the Suse-ati-driver rpm (fglrx) and the Suse-ati-kernel-module rpm (km-fglrx) installed correctly.
Or you didnīt "su root" first.

Greetings

Dru

The kernel sources are installed, I don't get that error anymore, just still no 3D, boots to a black screen with ATI 3D, or regularily but with MESA 3D, which only gives a horrible 24fps at full screen.

Have you done the

# sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx -b /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/profile/firegl

What do you get after that?

Donīt had any real problems with ATi so far.

Last time i installed the ATI rpm, after that i installed the SUSE rpmīs (only the km-fglrx.... because rpm told me that a newer version of the driver rpm is already installed). Did the rest like in Suseīs readme and had decent 3D acceleration.

Havenīt done much in linux lately but maybe i can take a look this evening.

Greetings

Drufuss,

I take it that your SUSE9.1 is using XOrg and not XFree4.3? I ask because I installed XFree 4.3 because the ATI drivers said that they were for XFree and not XOrg.

No, itīs still Xfree.

I have already downloaded the Xorg files, but didnīt have the time to install them.

I also used the rpmīs for Xfree 4.3.

Greets

It is Xfree 4.4 beta in suse, and ATI's drivers are only for up to 4.3, which leaves only suse's drivers as an option. Drufuss, you CANNOT use sax to configure 3D, even suse's own forums tell us that, and the readme, it just says not supported when I try.
I am willing to trade my 9800XT for a 5950 Ultra to anyone interested, must still be under manufacturers warrenty though as my 9800XT is.

Just to prove a point I ran that anyway, and as I thought itsaid auto configure complete, do I want to save, I chose no and configure, 3D configure says no 3D enabled, I click configure and it says not supported by my card.

can you boot into safe mode?

log into your root account

or if it just bombs:

# init 3
# cd ..
# cd ..
# /etc/SaX2
