MSI k8n neo ultra motherboard
AMD athlon 64 3200+ processor
ram configuration tried multiple configs
either 1 GB (2 *512) corsair value ram PC3200
or 2 (2*1042) GB mushkin HP 3200
even tried with just one stick in
hard drive WD 74GB raptor SATA
ATI radeon x800xl

everything i've tried to install

Kubuntu 64 bit version live cd
Ubutnu 64 bit live cd
Ubuntu 64 bit alternate installation
Ubuntu 32 bit live cd
all same problem after it it tries to boot off the cd the screen goes blank, i've left it running for 8 hours once and didn't go anywhere

fedora 7 64 bit version kinda works, crashes all the time though

gentoo 64 bit version live cd x windows won't start

runs windows xp and vista just fine

Ubuntu 32 bit alternate installation cd does however work, and works great.

Thanks in advanced

Oh well, Linux and ATI seem to be the problem here.

I think i never got the X800Pro running with linux completely (with hardware 3d-acceleration). Haven't tried for the X1950 so far. Maybe this will improve now that AMD does more for opensource drivers.

B.T.W.: I always installed Ubuntu via the alternate installation cd, the graphical one ever really worked for me.
In the past months i've done more with openSuse 10.2 than with ubuntu.

Greetings

Dru

Re: linux newb installation problem

Personally, I think that it may be the nVidia chipset that is causing the problem. Which is why I stick to Intel mobos.

On a side note, I had a Sony desktop with an nVidia chipset & AMD cpu that would not run W98, W98SE, WNT4.0, W2K, WXPH, WXPP, Fedora, SuSE9 or 10, Slackware 10, Ubuntu 6.10 or Kuntu, But it did run Dream Linux. Go figure. No, I didn't even bother with Gentoo... I'm a GNOME man. I don't need no stinkin' KDE.

I basically decided to trash the system, keeping the memory, psu, HD, CD burner and DVD ROM player. I suspect the AMD cpu is dying in that case, but it manifests as not being able to access the HDs because of the nVidia HD subsystem.

With Linux you have to try them all (distros) and see which one works the best (where it detects all the devices (chip sets)).
