Linux NOOB! and P35 Chipset Support

To make a long story short, I am going to give Linux a try for the first time starting probably about an hour from now. I have Googled and I am reading other articles now.

My project, and this is for work, is to build a NAS box. I want to do it open source and considered either FreeNAS (Unix based) or some version of Linux. Fedora has been recommended. I also hear that Linux gets updates more often than Unix.

So, does anyone know for 100% certain if Linux has Intel P35/ICH9R capability yet? If so, which distro for a TOTAL LINUX NOOB to build a NAS server? My plan is to use a P35 based MOBO.

I'm open to OS suggestions here for sure, thanks for the help.
