OpenSUSE 10.3 ... 32 or 64bit ?

I use looking into installing this distro and I know some of you use it.

Whats the scoop on 32 vs 64 bit ?
If you have a cpu that supports 64 bit is it better to stick with 32 bit ?

Also, I like gnome better but is it advisable to install the gnome version or stick with kde ?

Well ... I just tried both gnome and kde live cds.

They both look very clean and green

Both go online OK.
However, both versions can't find my windows network ... and no sound.

This is quite a shock ... I haven't experienced this in linux since suse 9.0.

The following distros have my network working out of the box;
Mepis 6.5
Mepis 7
Mint 4
PCLinuxOS 2007
PCLinuxOS gnome edition
Puppy 2.14
Xandros on Asus Eee PC

With sound as well.
All tested on the same hardware except for the Eee PC of course.

openSUSE 10.3 has sound problems. Although not publicly acknowledged, it is a weakness of the release. It is one of those problems that hits some hard and it works "out of the box" for others. Incidentally, this sound issue is one reason I changed my "primary" Linux OS to Fedora 8 late last year. I still have one machine running openSUSE 10.2, and I don't plan to touch that one.

Regarding 64-bit, it is my opinion that it is mature on those distributions that have a 64-bit version. For example, I ran both 32 and 64-bit versions of Fedora 8 on this box and could not tell any real difference between them. Of course, 64-bit can handle more than the 3-something gigabytes that a 32-bit system can address and is generally better with demanding audio-visual applications. Since software has to be specifically written for 64-bit, it will probably be a little while before its full potential is realized on the desktop. Still, how many people still sing the praises of a 16-bit operating system? The same will happen to 32-bit before many years pass.

I downloaded both 10.3 livcd gnome & kde.

I also downloaded the 32 & 64 bit dvd's.

Will try the livecd versions on a few systems and see what happens ...
