Re: OpenSUSE 10.3 released

Is it possible to dist upgrade without the whole thing going kaboom?

It's either 10.3 or Ubuntu 7.10. I'm leaning towards the latter, but if I could test-drive 10.3 without much fuss that'd be a plus.

You can always use a torrent:

An update from 10.2 shouldn't be too bad, unless you have a lot of third party software installed.

I plan to do an update as well, after I have saved my home partition and ~/etc.

But first I go on vacation, the Tuscany and Paris are more important for now.

Re: OpenSUSE 10.3 released

Isn't it a beta, by virtue of the fact that it is an odd numbered iteration? If so, then I'll wait until 10.4, the stable version, because when I installed 10.1 it never did any updates.

No, it is not a beta. the next version will be 11.0, to be released in 6-8 months.

I guess I chose the wrong word. What I meant to say was "Stable Version". Alphas and Betas are not stable versions. Is 10.3 stable and will it update? Or will it be stable and no updates?

I would think that 11.0 would only apply to KDE4. Since I am a GNOME man I could not care less. I no longer live on the bleeding edge. Just give me a stable release and I am happy.

Re: OpenSUSE 10.3 released

10.1 was just plain a bad release, which was a result of some developers having too much say in the release process and adding alpha-level software into the build, while pretending the work was release candidate quality. Novell was never able to repair 10.1 properly--and their reputation suffered as well. Hopefully the humiliation they went through at the hands of the Linux community made them learn to avoid repeating that behavior. I suspect this is the reason they took their time releasing 10.3--10 months for a minor release is a long time. They only took 6 months between 9.3 and 10.0, which was a major release (and a good one).
