My board is P4C800-E DLX, and I can NOT install Redhat 8.0, 9.0;
Fedora 1.0; Mandrake 9.1, 9.2 RC1; 9.2 RC2; 9.2.

Also Suse Live Evaluation 9.0, Knoppix 3.2 all hang at the first attemp to reach IDE hard disk.

It seems P4P800 works with Linux, while P4C800 does not.

Any idea ? TIA

Angry Linux on Asus P4c800

I believe its a problem with Linux not being able to recognise the SATA drive ?
I have a AsusP4C 800 Deluxe and I cannot install ANY version of Linux as they cannot "see" the SATA drive. They only expect to see the usual harddrive in the usual place. I cant even run Lindows as it cant see the SATA drive either.
Very frustrating !!!!
I have read in other threads that Redhat 9.2 beta fixes this ????
I have just tried RH 9 and Mandrake 9.
No luck on these at all
Windows is looking good now, after all this install hassle

Thanks Fred122 for your experience because it confirms what I found with my P4C800-E DLX (the i875 chip).

But I have *NO SATA* disk, only IDE disks either as Master or Slave on the primary IDE channel. The secondary IDE is for 2 CDRW drives.

At first I thought because the CDRW drive may have trouble, but after using the old Asus pure CD drive, and several Linux distros, I think the problem may be something else.

I remember, Linux installs fine with P4P800 DLX ( the i865 chip).
However, some people said they installed MDK 9.2 on the P4C800 or P4C800 DLX, not the -E version. Also, the BIOS for these i875 chip boards are all different; though I do not think BIOS has anything much to do with Linux installation.

Hi again with some new news.

After pondering on what to do next, I play the risky game: update the BIOS of my P4C800-E DLX, from 1009 to 1011 downloaded from Asus website, using Afudos once again after the disaster I had with P4P800 DLX.

This time I use: " afudos /pbn /iP4C811ED.ROM "
to flash. Then hot-reboot by Ctrl + Alt + Del, instead of power off.

It works, and a bit of surprise, Fedora 1.0; Mandrake 9.2; the SuSE 9.0 Live Eval (boot and work from CD like Knoppix), all work and installation were smooth, including using the onboard NIC to connect to Internet.

Just let you all know, particularly Fred122.

hejjo!

Hej! I joined the forums just cause of this post! I been looking all over for a way to install my 3c940/3c2000 to work with linux!

I have a P4R800-VM mb from asus, and im assuming this will work with it too, seeing as it is the same NIC... Shoot me if im wrong :P

Euhm... I am not home yet, but ill post how it goes when i do try it im hoping this will work with other distro's (no reason why it shouldnt) and im working with mandrake 9.1 (i know, i know). Im switching to redhat and/or lindows soon though.

Im hoping if i get the NIC to work, and the network and everything, then ill switch fully to linux, cause i hate windows and all of its bugs/virii/worms/etc. And with the recent leakage of the windows 2000/nt source, theres going to be a big swarm of viruses and worms going around... I think MS is screwed... Unless they take 2000/nt off the shelves and everyone buys XP or longhorne when it comes... But even still, majority of windows users are 2000/NT.... My college runs 2000.

Anyways, i kinda got a little off topic, so imma put this a lil back on topic... sorta.....

Are there any drivers for the ATI Raedon 9100 PRO? What about the soundcard? Im not too happy that all the distros i looked at so far arent compatible, but i guess thats one reason linux isnt real noob-friendly... Anyways, ill ttyl.

To all those trying to install their NIC, good luck :P

Simply use the SysKonnect sk98lin driver in the linux kernel for your NIC

sk98lin: Network Device Driver v6.15
(C)Copyright 1999-2003 Marvell(R).
eth0: 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940)
PrefPort:A RlmtMode:Check Link State
eth0: network connection up using port A
speed: 100
autonegotiation: yes
duplex mode: full
flowctrl: none
scatter-gather: enabled

I have a P4C800 Deluxe and it works fine I use the Fedora Core 1.

To get the sound to work nicely... use the alsa module (www.alsa-project.org) or you can also download rpms at freshrpms.net.

For your ATI card, simply download the drivers from ati.com.

I tried to use the sk98lin drivers... I used the GUI to do it, but it said that loading the device failed.... And the other thing is i heard so many people saying that they had probs with the sk... So imma try the 3com one, unless you have any suggestions/instructions on how to get the sk98lin one to work...

Thanks for the other info :P

EDIT:

Whats that other crap you posted? Do i have to edit some file to have that? What file? Where? im a noob, but not a noob noob :P

I believe the 2.6 kernel supports SATA. Do a search in here, I think pointreyes got it working with his SATA.

Yes there is sata support and while your at it, your sound (alsa), network, and in general a faster feeling system is in the 2.6 kernel.

hmm, i installed the GCC and kernel source no problem, but when i 'make load' it gave a whole bunch of errors... mainly ones saying files are missing... but i chacked the very first one in the list, and the very last one there, and they are all there.... And the folder was linux-2.42blablalba but it seems to have made an alias or something called linux... so i dont see why it isnt working???

Anyone help me?

ok, i did alot of work for nothing. I found out recently that i only thought it was a 3c940... dont ask me how i got thinking that.... but anyways, i read the manual for the mobo, and under LAN it says:

IXP200 built in 3Com MAC with Realtek 8201BL/CL LAN PHY

I am under the impression that 3com just made a base for a card, and asus threw a crap realtek on top or something?? i read something like that from google...

Anyways, i searched, and there are _NO_ drivers for it... Anyone wanna write one for me? rofl

sadly, it looks like my box wont see theinternet through linux ever :'(

anyways, imma reboot it back to windows, ttyl all.

hmm... strange... in windows device manager, it says the NIC is a 3com 3c920b-emb-wnm integrated fast ethernet controller.... can i get a linux driver for this?

[EDIT]

hmmm.... once again i have found myself answering my own questions that is how you learn! I learned that the new kernel (2.6) has support for that onboard NIC! So naturally, i googled it and found out that mandrake 9.2 still uses the 2.4.whatever kernel, and it would be a while till they change to 2.6. Thus i have came to the answer. Manually upgrade my kernel!

Well folks, this will be a long, stressful night, even though the instructions dont look too hard or complicated, but im a noob

ill tell you all how it goes
