Setting up Installation sources in SuSE

I know I covered that before, but it looks like we have more SuSE users than before.

Benefit of doing it, very easy installation of new software that is not on the dvd, easy upgrade to the latest KDE, easy update of all your current software.
So here are some must have sources:

the SuSE ftp server itself
Packman
Guru

How to add them:

-Open YAST
Click on Yast2modules
Click on software
Click on change source of installation - you need your root password
Now we can add the sources.

For KDE upgrades:
add FTP
server name: ftp.suse.com
directory name: pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/yast-source/

For packman:
add HTTP
server name: packman.iu-bremen.de
directory name: suse/9.1

For Guru:
add http
Server name: ftp.gwdg.de
Directory on Server: /pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/9.1

If you use SuSE 9.2, the just change the 9.1 in my links to 9.2.
When all done hit finish.
To use the new sources, go to install and remove software.
All software that can be updated has now blue fonts, just select them to be updated if you want.
You can use search if you are looking for some specific software.

For 9.3:

For KDE upgrades:
add FTP
server name: ftp.gwdg.de
directory name: pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.3/yast-source/

For packman:
add HTTP
server name: packman.iu-bremen.de
directory name: suse/9.3

For Guru:
add http
Server name: ftp.gwdg.de
Directory on Server: /pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/9.3

Thanks a lot for that swannema, I'm just migrating into Suse from MDK and haven't really read a lot yet so that info is great.

Unhappy

I was curious where I could get packages that I need and how to install them easily?

This is in-specfic for ipw-firmware packages I needed; found and had no clue at all how to install. I spent a night or two here trying to get help, but nothing really happend as i was suposablly one of the only ones that got suse w/o ipw pre-packaged on the dvd. Possibly something they are doing lately. My problem is also that I cannot even use ethernet in suse as that does not work either which is suposablly becasue centrino technologey on my laptop has my chip split into two which it does recgonize; when i go to configure it it needs the ipw-firmware package i do not have. Big big problem for me! Without this package it doesn't seem to be able to get an ip or whatever.

Edit :: My biggest problem as you can find out by my implying and your inferring is that I cannot acsess the net here and becasue this is my only suse linux machine and it is a notebook; I cannot acsess the internet meaning I have to run around with my external harddrive saving packages that I can't figure out how to work becaues im a linux dummy and the instructions are so complicated!

I suggest you head over to http://slforums.typo3-factory.net/
I don't have a centrino laptop and without seeing myself what's going on it's tough to help.

I'm not a member and I really hate to join just for one question; i'm sure someone here can probably help (its' better if your not a guru because this installation crap can be real confusing comparred to the old windows i'm used to). If you are a member, be free to copy and paste what I posted here; give me the link to monitor what goes and that'de be nice.

Edit ::
Once I saw they had a networking section; i decided to just signup as it wasn't complicated.

Thanks for the link bro! Let's see if anyone can sort out this bloddy problem.

I am a member over there as well. It is a forum that deals mainly with SuSE, there are some real Linux wizards in that forum. You might want to give them a try.
The url is a little bit weird because they restructure the forum. The real name is suse linux forum.
I did a quick search and it seems some packages need to be updated to make it work. I can see an update for the centrino in YOU.
Let me if I can get that file.

Roger that swanmea!

Sounding good already; if we can get this working we probably should create a sticky or something cause i'm sure i'm not the only one who had trouble with it. Couple days ago I saw a guy with whole guide for his sony viao and how he got it working, but he seemed to be more of a guru / expert and have the ipw-firmware package already.

Edit::

I also got a update frm here which did NOT help.

http://www.novell.com/linux/download...s/92_i386.html

29 Oct 2004 km_wlan: Drivers for Wireless LAN Cards
RPM km_wlan 27pre26-10.3 (i586) 2818 kB
Source-RPM wireless-tools-27pre26-10.3.src.rpm

This package contains the source code of some of the WLAN drivers included
in the kernel update package. The update fixes problems with WPA on Intel
PRO/Wireless 2100 cards and adds support for 802.11a and 802.11g rates
(54 MBit/s) on Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG and 2915ABG cards. It also adds
support for cards using ADM8211 chips from ADMtek. Furthermore the patch
fixes a firmware loading problem with ACX100/111 cards.
This package is only needed for recompiling these drivers.

Seems to be that my sony wireless chip is intergreated with the ethernet and all this is making trouble. Also seems to be that intel will not give any distrubution of linux there drivers. Once again we add to intels falling downside in the history of the previous 5 years of computing.

OK,
this is the file from, it contains the firmware:
http://cache-www.intel.com/cd/00/00/...0940_80940.zip

And here is the script from SuSE:
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp...100firmware.sh

That script shows only up for 9.1, again I don't have 9.2, therefore I don't see those updates.

I don't know but what I would try:
Put both files into one folder
Go to that folder and open a terminal, become root by typing su and hit enter, enter your password.
Now try to execute the script and see what happens.

sh fetchipw2100firmware.sh

will start the script, you will get an error message, but that message will tell you where you have to put that zip file.

I just run the script,

Quote:
stefan@linux:~/MyDownloads> su
Password:
linux:/home/stefan/MyDownloads # sh fetchipw2100firmware.sh
fetchipw2100firmware.sh: line 1: -----BEGIN: command not found
fetchipw2100firmware.sh: line 2: Hash:: command not found
unzip: cannot find /var/lib/YaST2/you/files/cd/00/00/08/09/80940_80940.zip, /var/lib/YaST2/you/files/cd/00/00/08/09/80940_80940.zip.zip or /var/lib/YaST2/you/files/cd/00/00/08/09/80940_80940.zip.ZIP.
/home/stefan/MyDownloads
linux:/home/stefan/MyDownloads #
As you can see it's looking for the zip file in /var/lib/YaST2/you/files/cd/00/00/08/09/80940_80940.zip

I guess you need to get it there and then run the script the same way as before.

So I am signing off for tonight.
