Suse 8.2 question..

I'm looking to try out an other os other than windows.. I saw an ad in p.c. world for suse 8.2 home edition... Have to admit it caught my eye..

For someone who has never used anything other than windows and a mac. Would this be the better choice for a noob to linux to use? or should I go with red hat or mandrake for some kind of dual boot on my system?

Is there any place I can legaly download a free copy or suse 8.2?

thanks for any info you can give me...

Pointreyes would be the best man to ask.

I just picked up suse actually. I'm thinking about making it my main OS at home. Mandrake and RH both have drawbacks IMO. Hopefully Suse will show them up!

Get Pro.

If I were you I'd get the Pro edition. Mainly because it comes with just about everything you'll need. SuSE 8.2 is a breeze to install and the SuSE Linux English mainling list is about the most helpful list you could ever join. They have lots of new people as well as lots of vets who don't mind answer questions.

Noah, If you get the notion, please post your impressions of Suse 8.2

Seems this is one of the Linux distros to support the new P4 800fsb cpu,s.

I'd certainly be happy to relate my findings, but I'm installing it on a dual AMD machine, so I won't be able to comment on 800fsb support etc - BUT - such hardware support is really a kernel issue, and is usually not distro specific, so, my hunch is that if the 2.4.20 kernel supports the newer 800fsb chipsets/cpus, than any distro can, with a properly configured kernel.

Thanks allot for all the info guys... It's a big help...

I have been doing some diggin on the Suse compatability list..

Looks like the only issues I'm gonna have are with my audigy 2 platinum and my 56k modem... Seems like there are allot of issues when It comes to winmodems.. Although I could have swore I have a hardware modem...

Ati seems to make a driver for the 9800 pro. So I think I'm in luck there..

Man, I need cable

Any of you know if there is a driver solution for the audigy 2? I checked the creative site but they say that they don't make linux drivers for it..

Thanks guys...

Well, I can attest to the fact that SuSE 8.2 does support the 800 FSB procs. However, it did give me a problem. Here's link about what I experienced: http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/sho...3?threadid=181
What happened to me is nothing unusal to see on a new chipset board with Linux. However I have only seen to happen to me with Via chipset boards so it was strange to see it happen with an Intel chipset board.

If Intel ever provides support for the ICH5R for Linux then I will try again with SuSE on my Canterwood system. Intel did say they would be providing drivers for the controller.

And yes, it does not support the Audigy 2 very well but you can supposedly get it to work but I did not bother to try after what I stated on the link above with switching to a SATA drive.

One very huge advantage of SuSE over Mandrake and Red Hat is what you get for the price. A very large set of reading material in book format-not on CD but books-yes books in plural. I find this to be a great way to learn more about Linux for the new user.

As for the 9800 Pro-I'm not sure what will happen there. I know that the 9700 series is supported so maybe the distro will make it be a 9700. Sorry, not to sure on that one.

pointreyes, I have a question: does SuSE 8.2 Professional out-of-the box support Multi Processors e.g. two Pentium PIII proocessors?

Yes. Back when I had a PIII-750 dually, SuSE 8.0 supported it. Now that I'm using an Athlon dually, I'm using SuSE 8.2 Pro and it supports it out-of-the box. SuSE 8.0 also supported the Athlon dually as well.

Haha, it appears that Noah has beat me to answering your question.

Well, I just got a free retail copy of redhat 8.0 that a friend of mine said he bought just before christmass.. I don't think I'm ready to ionstall anything just yet.. but I now at least have one little book about linux that i can read thru...

I think I would still rather use Suse..

I woke up this afternoon with a real bad feeling in me.. How about a build a linex specific box... I was looking once again at the suse compatability chart.. It says that the voodoo 5 is fully supported (I have one of those liying around).

I still would not have any 56k modem support, But frankly it's time I got of my butt and got cable.. maybe this project might inspire me...

I suppose I could always upgrade my windows box's mobo and cpu. and in turn use the current mobo and cpu in the linux box..

My trinitron monitor Has two vga connections with a slide switch on the front of the unit for changing between the two displays.. so I woulden't need to buy a new monitor or anything.

I'm have a spare ten gig hard drive at the office that I never use.. should be plenty of space for a beginner linux box... I think that too is supported...

So I guess my next question is, sound... How do I get working sound? Do any of you guys know if the onboard sound of the A7V8X is supported? I don't seem to find any reference to this on the suse site.. Maybe some of you may have an answer to this...

If not, Maybe you guys can suggest a REAL CHEAP soundcard that will work for me... enough so I can just do the basic mp3 listening.. Etc.

Thanks guys.. You all have been a big help...

The cheap blue box Philips sound card at Best Buy works. Another option is the SB!Live cards, can't you normally get them for as little as $30 now a days. However, I did not have much luck with SuSE 8.0 Pro with the A7V8x The Via KT400 chipset seems to be a problem with Linux. I don't know if that has changed with the more recent distros or not but it was definitely a problem with the KT400 chipset. I tried two different boards (Asus and MSI) and got the same results with the chipset.
