| Ubuntu spoke as in specific kernel optimizations, not architecture type available. Unless this is what they have meant, which would be odd for it is slightly misleading. I cannot find this statement right now, but I have seen others in their forums looking for it too. |

| Amarok is a SWEET mp3 player, its better (imo) than foobar2000. It requires the KDE-Libs, but thats nothing, and it allows you to run any kde app

| SAWWWEEEEET! thats awesome news, i might even put linux back on my main machine. For drivers i am personally of the opinion that closed source is better than nothing. Finally companies are seriously supporting linux, which is great news!

| Hi there! Since there already is a thread about Ubuntu 6.06 i will post my experiences with it here. I already had Breezy Badger installed, with working W-Lan (without encryption, only because i didn´t knew that my router needs "shared-key" WEP encryption), and therefore working internet connection, DVD-player, NVidia-driver, Soundcard, mp3-player, etc.etc.) I thought about updating this installation, but decided to do a clean new installation because the latest upgrade didn´t installed the boot splash screen as it did with a new installtion and because i thought no important data will get lost. When i ran the Live-CD, that was shiped to me for free, i wasn´t able to use mouse or keyboard (Logitech DiNovo bluetooth). So i downloaded the alternate install CD (someone in the company raised the download limit) and used that for installation. After some attempts ended with the installation of GRUB on fd0 stopping at 50% i managed to install it yesterday evening. Ubuntu did boot, but i wasn´t able to log in because mouse and keyboard didn´t work. So i searched the whole house for a spare keyboard and mouse (Logitech Wireless) and used these to log in, uninstall every thing that has something to do with bluetooth, added the retricted modules, etc. etc. Now i can use Ubuntu with my DiNove keyboard and mouse and the soundcard is working. I failed to install the NVidia-drivers, but only because i tried to use NVidias install script. And i didn´t managed to get my DLink DWL-G520 to work. Have tried to install madwifi, using the files that already worked for Suse 10.1, but somehow make complained about missing files. So fr no networking for me. Besides the few things still not working (and the GRUB troubles) the installatino ran quick and easy, and GRUB also has an entry for my Suse Linux. Greetings Dru

| Update: My DWL-G520 seems to be properly installed. I can configure the card with iwconfig but still can´t get a connection to my router. Somehow i think that WEP is the problem. In SuSE i have to set it to WEP shared-key (cause this seems to be what my router expects) but i don´t know how to set it that way ubuntu. Greetings Dru

| I've installed ubuntu with no problems and have practically totally migrated. I am running ubuntu for my desktop and have been for a month and loving it! I still can't believe how simple they have made linux in installation, upgrading, with minimal/not comprimising security and power. Linux for the everyday PC user is now an option. Best part is... it's free! I give this 2thumbs up. |

| Automatix To solve some of your problems of getting a fully working ubuntu desktop quickly and easily, try this script called Automatix. You can get it from http://www.getautomatix.com/ . It can install many popular post mods on a ubuntu box in the manner of minutes. |

| I did a hardware re-evaluation over the long weekend. My secondary box which I'm not using is intended for use on my model railroad whenever I get that built. It will connect to my LAN using a Squeezebox 2 acting as a wireless bridge (oh and I'll be using the SB2 to play music while I work on the RR). The hardware specs on this machine are: ECS K7SOM+ 5.2C (1.2 GHz AMD Duron soldered-in) 256 MB PC2700 DDR 40 GB 7200 RPM Western Digital HDD, my old primary PC backup drive MicroATX case that came with my first PC in 1998 An old PCI ATi Radeon 32 MB, not for performance but so that I don't have to use system memory for graphics I added/upgraded to: - a 300 W PS (from a 200 W that was with the case originally) - a 12 X 10 X 32 Lite-On CDRW drive Both those items came from a case a neighbour discarded! I also removed the floppy drive - this will be my first floppy-less machine. Makes for less noise, a slightly faster startup, slightly less power consumption and a cleaner look. This PC was running Windows 98SE. With the discontinuation of support on June 1st, the already-large holes in this ancient OS are only going to get larger. Now was the time to upgrade to Linux, and this time for good - I had experimented before with it but had no reason to keep using it full-time. Plus in addition to regular OS stuff that would be included with any Linux OS, I needed only two model railroading applications, both of which are Linux-compatible: XTrkCad (CAD program) and JMRI, the Java Model Railroad Interface, for automation and control. Installation of 6.06 went very well. I was surprised to find the install CD doubles as a live CD and that the live CD is used to launch the install. All my devices were detected and working after install. Just like how it will be used full-time, I have it connected to a Squeezebox as a wireless bridge, and this works well for Internet access - downloading all 160 updates without an issue. The interface looks like a million bucks - KDE never looked right to me. The machine is quite snappy. All the preinstalled apps and features work fine, including USB stick auto-detection and unmounting. With my Windows mindset, I then went to the Synaptic Package Manager and started removing items I wouldn't need, like the Bluetooth stack and wireless utilities. However that ends up removing other packages due to module dependencies and I ended up without a GUI when I rebooted. Had to reinstall and this time only removed items that were standalone - this ended up only being the HFS (Apple file system) drivers and a few obscure language localizations. Installation of XTrkCad did not go well, which is still my main gripe about Linux. After a lot of "sudo"s, finally got it installed after 5 hours of frustration. Still don't have JMRI working yet and everyone admits it's a difficult install. My main issue apart from JMRI is slow-as-molasses LAN performance. After a very long wait, I can sometimes see the contents of my Windows shares but I can't copy any files larger than a few kB. Also performance of various local network-attached devices/webservers (my router, SlimServer that comes with the Squeezebox and my new SmoothWall box) is abysmal - the pages never really load completely. This is something the Ubuntu machine will need to do - controlling the audio from the Squeezebox is easiest from the SlimServer web interface. So it's off to the Ubuntu forums to see if I can get this working. |

| Hi Froach! Greetings and saltations! Nice to meet you in this thread. The hardware i´m running this linux on (right no wi´m using SuSE10.1 but Ubunut 6.06 is installed aswell) isn´t the newest too (except the graphixcard) and overall i have to say that i´m pleased with both distributions. Ubuntu needs all bluetooth softawre removed to let the keyboard and mouse work. And madwifi or something alse is recognizing the W-Lan card, but somehow i can´t get it running with WEP. SuSe has nothing for my W-lan but after installation of madwifi drivers everything runs fine (with WEP). Only they broke YOU and YAST with ZEN (and i thad the feeling that YOIU was finally really working in their last release). Hope you find the right help for your problems (ubuntuforums is great, and there are many other online sources. Okay, SuSe has improved on that side too) Greetings Dru P.S.:SMART rules in SuSE! Anyway i like SYNAPTIC more.

| Yep, the linux kernel tolerates low-end hardware very well - just installed SmoothWall on a Pentium 166 (!), running smooth as butter. It's the desktop GUIs that demand the horsepower, but even then this requirement is well below even Windows 98. 'Long as they keep it that way, I'm happy as my older boxes can serve some purpose. I still have an AMD K6-2 400 with motherboard that I'm not using, but no case. It could either be a low-end full Linux machine or a higher-end SmoothWall. Just have to wait for a neighbour to throw out another old PC so I can get a case! |
