I love Ubuntu 6.06.

The ability to access my Windows NTFS partitions is definately my fav new feature. I only wish I could access my Ubuntu partition from Windows...

http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/ext2ifs.htm

It only supports EXT2 and EXT3 (as if it were EXT2, no journalling)

The Ubuntu forums are quite good. There are some items that can be disabled in System - Services but the most definitive way of doing this is via the Boot-Up Manager...(get ready for it)...bum!

bum

I have to think something like that was named on purpose.

So I have to, umm, go take a look at Ubuntu's bum to see what's up. <snicker>

This means I'll have tried:

- Mandrake
- SUSE 9
- Fedora (I don't remember which version, it never installed)
- Knoppix HD install (aka Debian)
- FreeBSD (yeah I know it's not Linux, its more like UNIX)

and I think one or two others. And yet I'm still very much a Linux newbie as I when I got frustrated with any of these I just wiped it and stopped playing with it.

This time I'll stick it out because I have to. I can't/won't go back to Windows 98SE, I just don't feel safe using it anymore. Plus Ubuntu feels faster.

personally, i like freebsd mindset and ideals, but linux is just so much more usable that i stick with it.

I have tried most of those Unix like os's and loved them all, except knoppix which i find to be poorly laid out, however, i last used it on knoppix 3.5.

I will be using SuSE 10.1 at school very soon, so i cant comment on it, but i am going to give SLED a try. Unless its really different and better, i will be sticking with Ubuntu

John thanks for the EXT2IFS link. Will be a great program if i ever decide to boot into windows again lol

Froach: You can still keep a floppy disk i nthere and just skip it in the boot options. You still find it faster even if it's not in the boot sequence?

Everyone's going this way now and I just wanted to see if I could do it.

It also saves power and makes bootup a little less noisy.

If I need one I can install one temporarily.

I still have a floppy in my SmoothWall box, mostly because I don't have any blanks for that case. However I yanked the power and data cable and disabled it in the BIOS.

Here is another one, but from a German developer, with read AND write access for ext2 and ext3:

EXT2IFS supports Read and Write for EXT2 and EXT3.

the ONLY thing weird about EXT2IFS is that it uses EXT3 in EXT2 mode, meaning that you still get read and write accesss, its just journaling you miss.
