Ubuntu 6.06

Installed 6.06 over my 5.10 Breezy installation yesterday. Such an improvement in installer! Fully graphical via the Live CD. Pretty soon there'll be no reason, in terms of installers, why Joe Sixpack couldn't install at least Ubuntu without being all nervous and such (not getting to choose default OS for GRUB is a mistake, though).

I'm liking 6.06 so far. Haven't done much else than getting it fully up to speed in terms of updates and configuring Firefox and whatnot, but still, nicer than 5.10 was.

Anyway, just a short post on the fact that 6.06 is a big step forward compared to 5.10 in terms of installer. Now I just have to learn how to fiddle around Synaptic and how to make sure there are no inconsistencies if I compile Mono separately and whatnot.

Bang on Kongo! 6.06 is much better and much easier to install than 5.10 ever was. With 6.06, Ubuntu instantly recognises my 19" widescreen setup and Nvidia 7800GT unlike 5.10 which always left me without a graphical interface since it did not recognise the card and monitor.

Since I am still a newbie when it comes to Linux, it'll take me a while to figure out how to do things but at least Ubuntu makes learning enjoyable. My biggest problem so far is trying to figure out how to get 6.06 to recognise my windows partitioned drives.

Other than that, everything else works like a charm and I'm a happy camper.

I had my Windows partitions (I have 3 NTFS and 1 FAT32) detected during the install even and I had Nautilus shortcuts to them at the first boot.

Since they're all on the same HDD (/dev/hda) that might have been the case they were automagically detected.

i had this installed for a while before the vista beta came out.. i had cedega running games for me. Its a great linux distro for sure. I'll be going back to it soon probably because getting software to work in vista beta 2 is almost as hard if not worse then linux

6.06 is a great os. my P4 is running it, and i find myself using it more than the Opteron.

The livecd installer is really easy, but i would caution against it. I have had numerous issues with the LiveCD installer, and i find the "alternative" (classic) install cd to be a much better route, if you know what your doing. My main problem is the livecd installer freezes a lot for me, and doesnt go back in the wizard cleanly

Ya know i've noticed recently and influx in reports of things like that. Poeples vista dvds not reading all the time and 6.06 cds having read errors as well. It could just be that you need to lower the write speed when you create the cd/dvd.

(:

I'd me more impressed knowing that my G5 could install PPC 6.06 seamlessly. Yeah, I'd dump OSX in a heartbeat for Ubuntu.

I heard that as well and used the "alternate" install CDs for Ubuntu (a one day trial just to see what it was like) and Kubuntu (the one that stayed on my laptop). For the record, Kubuntu 6.06 is faster on my laptop than 5.10, has better wireless support (but still needs work), plays multimedia fine (although I have not tested DVDs--no need), and even looks nicer.

One downside: no MP3 playback by default. Easy enough to fix, but still laughable. Prolly licensing issues to blame. Finally I can enjoy The Foundry Field Recordings' lovely new Prompts/Miscues in Ubuntu as well.

I was reading that they have made kernel optimizations for each version type on the release of it. Is there a listing of what was done for each one for I have not found them? I am curious about them and the difference.

by default you get the 386 kernel, but i have the 686 kernel which includes SMT support.

KDE just isnt my cup of tea anymore. If you give Gnome a shot, its MUCH better than KDE. Its simple, clean and FAST

I have Ubuntu running on 2 PCs and I agree with John64 about Gnome. I tried Kubuntu and to me Gnome is the better desktop. If the improvements continue on the order of those between 5.10 and 6.06, Ubuntu will be a real alternative to MS. Except for gaming, I think it already is ( I havent tried Cedega).

6.06 is a much better os than 5.10, and 5.10 was damn good!

Useability wise, apart from gaming, i can do everything on my linux computer that i can on my windows computer, though the legalities of some are questionible (mp3 playback, divx playback etc)

I wish people would open the formats, even if they keep their programs closed!

getting mp3 support is easy though

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats

One of the nice things about linux and ubuntu in particular is the documentation.

Anyway the new version of cedega is even better then before, it has game profiles now, and loads the best known configuration. You can even play oblivion to some degree, they are working hard for the shader 2.0 support but its not quite ready yet.
