Ubuntu 6.06 Dual Boot Install

Hi

I’m attempting a dual boot Win XP Home and Ubuntu 6.06 on my Acer Laptop. Following is my configuration:

HDA1 – Windows Ghost Partition (3 GB)
HDA2 – Windows Home (44.92.GB)
HDA3 – Ubuntu 6.06 (14.65 GB)
HDA5 – Swap (1.8 GB)
HDA6 - /Home (28.79 GB)

I didn’t want to mess with the MBR so loaded it to HDA3 (HD0,2). I know I’m missing something simple but when I reboot, it boots immediately to Windows (i.e.no option for GRUB. I searched the Ubuntu forums and used the root (hd,02), setup (hd0,2), etc..., to which it said "succeeded," but still boots to windows???

Is it possible to even make this happen? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

EW

The choice is yours, but you will have fewer problems, now and in the future, if you let GRUB write to the master boot record. I have double and triple boot machines with GRUB in the MBR and so far have not encountered any issues. (That is not a guarantee, by the way, but I think the risk is very low.)

Use BootPart. I used this when I had a dual boot setup between Windows XP and Fedora Core 3 to keep Windows on the MBR, yet allow the Windows boot menu to start up Linux also. Some Windows utility software like Norton System Works have issues with Windows not being on the MBR, I believe.
