| Picked up a 80 sata hdd and installed ubuntu on the following hardware; P4C800e deluxe with a 3.2 prescott 1 gig DDR 400 ram Nividia 5900XT video card dvd-rom and floppy I like doing installs to a separate hdd, this way I have nothing to fear if I screw something up I pressed f4 to set the res at 1024x768 but it didn't take on boot. I figured I pickup the wrong one so I tried again ... same thing. I set it up under preferences and now it's good. Another little thing, after logging out using the live cd it tells you to remove the cd and press enter. I did and nothing happens. I have tried this cd on a few systems and this has not worked yet. I need to shut the system down by holding the start button. After it's installed it boots up and shuts down fine. I also tried enabling desktop effects. It installed the nvidia driver, it tried a few things but the window wobble was bothering me so I unabled desktop effects. On a fresh boot it stopped using the nvidia driver. There were also 15 updates waiting for me after the install ... no problem with that. It also seems to use the same user and root passwords. I typed sudo passwd and changed to another but whenever I make a system change, it doesn't accept to new pw and I need the use the user one. Networking to windows systems, NAS and internet all work out of the box. It's very nice and clean feeling and even though I'm a total ubuntu noob, I find it very easy to find stuff I'm looking for like hardware information, screen res, system monitor ... whatever. It's all written in plain English.

| Sudo can be set up so you only have to use your own user's password to temporarily gain superuser. It's actually very granular, and you can set it up so you can only sudo e.g. make and nothing else. It makes sense, though, since in a corporate environment, you may need superuser for some specialized task, but the root user wouldn't want you to know the root password. Sudo privileges are controlled by root, root decides what you can and cannot do, and if you leave your terminal open logged in, a passer-by still needs to know your password to sudo, which is good. Ubuntu is really nice in that way, good isolation to prevent users from running "rm -rf *" as root and oooops everything's gone.

| Ok ... posting from ubuntu 7.04 After disabling the desktop effects, I noticed the refresh rate had dropped. I checked and it was at 53 hz when I originally set it to 85. After checking I was still using the nvidia driver (the system loads it when you enable desktop effects) so this required me to start searching for a solution. Didn't feel comfortable with what I was reading so I did a fresh install, much easier at this stage. So now I'm back to 1204x768 @ 85 hz. Before doing the install I swapped out the video card and put in a FX 5200 and replaced the stock cooler with a Zalman 9500 LED to cut down on the noise. Ubuntu system specs. P4C800e deluxe with a 3.2 prescott 1 gig DDR 400 ram Nvidia FX 5200 128mg video card dvd-rom and floppy hdd 80 sata WD OCZ 600 watt GameXstream psu After poking around a bit, I noticed that there is not as many apps that come preinstalled as with MEPIS. However, finding things is easier because of the layout.

| If you have the nvidia driver installed you can access the settings by typing "sudo nvidia-settings" (without the quotes) in a console. Then you can adjust resolution etc. and save your settings. I found that if you don't do that you can lose your settings when you reboot.

| I found the transfer speed on the network to be slow. I checked and it's at 10mb/sec using e1000 driver. I thing the P4C800e deluxe uses a Marvel chip ... What can be done to get it to 100 mb/sec ?

| Hmm ... I tried a usb key and was able to transfer stuff off it. When it came time to remove it a right clicked on it on the desktop and there was no unmount command. So I selected eject and it disappeared from the desktop but the light on the key still remained on. I removed it later on after shutting down the system. So far I have had screen res, network speed and usb key issues. I have not tried installing a printer, using an external hdd or play xVid's and mp3's but from what I read, mp3's don't work out of the box either. Granted I'm sure this issues can all be fixed by getting your hands dirty. I'm getting the feeling that MEPIS has alot more working out of the box than ubuntu. I didn't have any of the above issues when installing MEPIS 6.5. I was also able to get much further in MEPIS since I installed printers, external hdd and downloaded torrents, burned dvd's, listened to xVid movies and mp3's without any issues so far.

In GNOME if you set up a wallpaper it is applied to all 4 desktops. In KDE each desktop can have a different wallpaper. Basically you then choose the picture that you're in a mood for.

| Yeah, that is one of my pet peeves with Gnome. I now prefer Gnome over KDE but I would really like to know what screen I'm on by the background instead of diverting my attention to the bottom right. |

| I really do not understand Ubuntu for not being up with the times when it comes to desktop resolution and refresh rate support. It is very modern in all other aspects, and I am pleased with this! However, it irritates me to no end, especially after installing a driver, to not have a greater range of support for resolutions and refresh rates (out of box). It is very asinine, IMO. |

| Ubuntu has this thing about thing about all "free" drivers and software. It seems they are more concerned with the distro being "free" than having a smooth out of the box experience. I installed a DLink nic and now it's at 100 mb/sec btw. I also tried PCLinuxOS test release 4 over the weekend and liked it very much. Mepis and PCLinuxOS are on the same page when it comes to giving the user a great out of the box experience and are very user friendly. When PCLinuxOS releases it's final version, I will be installing it over ubuntu.
