Ubuntu and printing on a Network Printer

First up, I am a complete novice when it comes to Linux!

I have just installed Ubuntu to a spare machine.
All was going quite well apart from a couple of niggles that I hope you can help me with.

Printing
The Ubuntu box is on my LAN and I would like to be able to print to a network printer on the same LAN. How do I do that?

DNS Server
The Network dialogue box keeps putting the IP for my modem/router in as the DNS thingy. Whilst this works with the Windows boxes, it does not work with this one. If I put in an IP for a DNS Server it will use it for a while, but then it changes back to the Router address! How can I either have it use the DNS Server provided by the router (as in Windows) or have it keep the IP address I give it?

Thanks guys.

Well, I solved the problem of the DNS Server myself!

Now, if someone could help with the printing ..............

Maybe this thread can be of help. It seems if you change a line in the CUPS configuration file to let the system browse for printers, the networked printer should should show up.

Thanks for that kONGO, but nothing suggested there works for me.

I'm stumped!!!!

My Epson 750 is attached to a Print Server (192.168.0.50) which is attached to my Router. The printer is called "EPSON" and the server "SERVER".
If I browse my Windows Network I see EPSON and can drill down to SERVER.
If I browse the Linux Network I see EPSON, but thats all! I can't see SERVER!

So by selecting EPSON and printing to it (from whatever Linux application you use) nothing happens, I gather?

I've never used a networked printer myself, so I'm not up to snuff how the whole thing works.

I found these two by Googling, not sure if they help (they aren't Ubuntu-specific either). The solution seems be how CUPS is configured.

Perhaps you'll get faster and more correct answers at the Ubuntu forums. Sorry I can't be of much more help .

Thanks for all you help kONGO!

You've given me another forum to try, that's a great help.
I'm already in the Ubuntu forums, but haven't yet found anything that works for me.

I guess I'll keep looking!

Once again, thanks for the help!
