Vista SPR (System Performance Rating)

SPR (System Performance Rating) is a numerical rating (on a scale of 1 to 5) that identifies components that are slowing it down. You can find this rating in the Vista Control Panel. Nice little feature that I could have used over the last few years. :flowercool:

The SPR gives me good ratings all but my FX 5500 Nvidia Video Card... it is only 2.6.... (yes its old but still works) ,
could buy a BETTER Video card if "Vista" did not cost so much...

My new Gateway got a 4.6. I am planning on getting 5+. I think I should be able to do so when directx 10 and compatible cards come out. Actually, I probably could get it with a directx 9 card. My card is, I think, fair to middling.

It actually goes up to 6. based (by MS) on present hardware performance. Ms hope to improve the top figure as manfacturers , in turn, improve their hardware.
When you say you have been using it for the past few years, are you referring to Vista or something else. I think the Performance rating test was first introduced in 5339 (I think) about february this year.

I think Dazzlin just means that it would have been useful for past performance issues/upgrades... and I agree, this would have been great in XP! It is a useful feature. When you say it goes up to 6, do you mean 6.0 or 5.9 Dave? I get 4.6 like Znod because of my DAMNED processor!!! But I don't need/want a better one for the moment

I think it actually goes only to 5.9.

Yes. Your right. Apologies. I misread it. I didn't see the "could" . Yes , I generously rounded the figure up! The drawback in the test is that the figure is based on the worst performer. In my case this is my graphics card and brings me down to a miserable 3.6. My point being, that as I am not a games player using heavy graphics, my (quite high spec) computer still out performs many of my acquaintance, for normal home computer work.

It appears that most PCs get a gaming graphic rating of 3.6.

Right, same with my laptop--which gets a score of 1.0.

Well. I dare not mess with my wife's laptop, but I guess they all get a pretty low mark for the graphics card. ? Maybe bad news ahead for the laptop buisness?

Znod is right, goes up to 5.9. My computer got a 4.9 rating and that is the gaming graphics. Everything else seems to be well above 5.

A laptop won't necessarily get a low rating, in general, or graphics card rating; it will depend on its graphics set up in the later case. And, now, some laptops are Vista Premium ready even with integrated graphics.

I know we discussed this issue on a previous thread many moons back. Some users of Vista buy their components in order to increase their index rating. Will a user stop buying components when his/her PC reaches a perfect score? What about if all the manufactures, or at least the main players, tweak their PCs to get a perfect rating for example, will users be willing to update their perfect score PC in the future? Will MS degrade your PC's index performance to compensate for newwer technology?

Good questions. I don't know any of the general answers, but I would bet that MS "ups" its current scale. But, who knows.

As for upgraders, I would not chase a moving target. I am in the process of chasing 5.0 or greater, but that's as far as I will go until my next computer. I am very sure that some upgraders and PC manufacturers will chase the target no matter how far it moves.

In this regard, there will be an interplay, IMO--for example, as manufacturers come closer an closer to perfect across their lines, then MS will raise the bar some--whether it creates a new scale or sticks with 0 to 5.9. Then, the builders will work a bit harder.

No matter what numbers are chosen, the scale still has to remain ordinal. I think MS will keep raising the bar just enough to stay ahead of the builders--although some may be allowed to get perfect scores--none of which I have seen so far.

And, incidentally, I have never seen where MS says what score implies Vista Premium readiness. But, my inference is that it is 3.0.

What is Vista Ready ???????

My laptop installed Vista Ultimate and only had a graphics rating of 1.4 then Vista updated drivers and performance went to 1.6.
If it works it is Vista Ready. (IMHO). The performance rating is simply another
PLOY to "make ppl buy upgraded equipment (IMHO) again...I'll keep my Laptop for a while... it plays all my games (that I play), finds all the wireless nets, and does a pretty fair job for a Acer 5000 Series. Dual boot XP and Vista. XP wireless only found 2 access points - 2 bars best, Vista found 4 access points - 2 had 4 bars, 1 - 3 bars and 1 - 1 bar...OK good enough for me...3 of 4 unsecured which I could use.
