Talking CompletePC Backup Looks Good

Hi Friends:

I decided to try the CompletePC Backup routine today--well almost all of it. So, I created a (full) 5384 disk image on an external firewire using this procedure. The process worked very well although no options were given. The file size is about the same as the file sizes I get when I make (full) disk images of my XP drive--which using Ghost's recommendations applies some compression. So, I imagine CompletePC Backup applied some compression. Being able to make restore images is very important to me since, once I get a drive working well, I want to hang on to it.

After making my 5384 image, I started up with the 5384 disk I had made from my downloaded ISO file to investigate the restore options. And, everything one would want to see was there. I stopped one step short of restoring--sort of like screeching to a stop at the edge of the grand canyon.

Update:

I tried the Windows (RC1) Complete PC Backup today. All went well. I didn't pay much attention to how long it took. The time was typical of what it takes for me to image either of my drives, etc.--say 40 minutes. No surprises.

PC Imaging

Znod, what software are you using to create and image of the HD? I have used Ghost for years, however Vista gives it a no-no on the attempted install. I do have other imaging softwar, but as yet have not attempted an install.

Doing a Complete PC Backup is possible through Control Panel > Backup and Restore Center.

Cool Dave.

And, now I have done a completely successful backup on 5728.

Vista upgrade for Ghost

News Release Symantec Releases Vista-Compatible Norton Solutions

Info on Vista backup works but actually destroys the prior info before it replaces... so all is lost between backup and restore...
I prefer Vista's restore /offline rather than backup/restore.. It uses the last restore point created..and (IMHO) works very well, personally tested 2 times after deliberate BSOD and erasing required files/folders...
and it is FAST.. much faster than XP..

Good point Snuffy. I will try your suggestion first if I every have a serious restoration-needed problem. Then, if your approach doesn't work, using my Acronis disk image should provide a good last resort.

Another vote for Acronis, I love this software. Works great in XP and Vista.

I have never used any other than GHOST, but if this ACRONIS is as good as you say. I will surely test it out....

I did a search at Microsoft on "Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore" this AM and found a number of problems with the Restore side of the tool. Everything from:
It fails with error . . .
to
Can't install programs . . .

Has anyone actually done a Complete PC Backup and then the Restore to a different disk?

The docs indicate you can do your complete backup to a DVD/DVD set. Has anyone tried that yet?

I'm considering alternatives at this point, but if the built in really works, would like to use it.

I tested the backup using DVD-RW...

slower to burn - yes
slower also equal less chance of errors on burning...

Snuffy:

Did you do a restore to the same disk, or another disk? Have you had any problems installing software?

No problems incurred... so added a FREE small spare HDD. to SCSI Card. and have used it as storage for the image... faster to restore than DVD. both work, I'm not sure but it took longer to copy the DVD image to I:\ than it did to RESTORE...

I also keep the restore points to a min... by using clean advanced and remove all but the latest recovery/restore points.

Remember when all else fails and before you restore by image...
try restore by DOS... who ever you can BOOT... then use CMD = DOS.

System Restore from command line:

rstrui.exe /offline:C:\windows
It works also ..
