Defender better worse same

Compared to other available options for dealing with Spyware, is Defender, in your opinion, a better alternative, a worse alternative or the same as the other spyware programs out there?

So far, Defender has worked better for me personally than anything else. But your mileage may vary.

Defender works just ok for me. I am one who sometimes will run more than one spyware program on my PC...

Avast works good and so does Ad-Aware for free too....

I use the same programs as you. All, including Defender, appear to be working very well for me.

Unless you are a really useless abuser of the internet, getting ANY spyware for these programs to even spot is difficult! I 3-4 years I have had 1 trojan and that was cause of my 'lil bro!

Therefore all of this stuff is nice but only a precaution for simpletons

I have only had one significant virus in all my years, and have had no serious spyware. It follows since I am not a "useless abuser." But, I'm going to stick with my "simpleton" devices. I'm :scared:.

I am really having a hard time with this one... So your symptoms are;

1) No start bar or task manager ever?

2) Disappearing and reappearing icons with a faulty user account?

Is it both of those... one of those... neither of those?

Have you tried creating a new user? Can you get to the system restore in vista itself?

Sorry to be of such uselessness... but I can't figure what the actual problem is

Defender is ok for deleting startup and programs, etc.
But the perpose of Defender doesn't really show as it doesn't pick up anything as I have Ad-aware SE & Spybot..they seem to pick up the tracking cookies and others but not Defender.

Kinda sucks really..

On a security forum I saw that Defender's detection rate was around 46%. I am going to experiment and just use Norton for my malware detection needs (Znod, I think I read post of yours somewhere of doing something similar). AV's now are getting good at detecting malware on their own. Plus the fact that I am running as a Standard User should help even more. Here at work we use Symantec 10.x and since we upgraded from 9.x it seems like me and the SysAdmin don't have to go around and clean up workstations like we used to.
