Overview of Windows Mail

Windows Mail is a completely overhauled mail client that appears to be very good. It includes the same spam filter that is used on the latest version of Outlook, which will be updated on a regular basis.

Most exciting is that it will include a phishing filter, similar to IE7's. This alone should make it worth using.

Instant-search is a great addition. As you type, searches update and instantly filter out things that don't match your search (it searches the names, addresses, subjects, and bodies of emails).

Tired of corrupting your mail database when your power goes out? No more! If you lose power while updating the database, you won't corrupt the whole mail database; instead, you'll only lose the one entry that it was working on at the time.

Is Vista going to include a full-fledged mail client comparable to Outlook or will it be a reduced client like outlook express?

Never used Outlook or Express much myself. I used Pegasus Mail for years becasue I am weird and now I use thunderbird.

Phishing refers to those emails we all get that pretend to be from some bank or paypal or wherever, but really aren't.

I agree with Harbaugh, and the phishing filter..how does that work? They can never guarantee to get rid of all that stuff for you. That would be impossible.

I was under the impression that the phishing filter was a feature for IE7 used to "phish" for suspicious code on websites? Is it integrated into the mail client too?

I currently use Thunderbird as my mail client and have an extension installed to detect phishing emails. It works well. So, it can be done via the mail client.

Ok so would you be able to explain to me what happens exactly if the Phish thing happens to 'find' a dodgy email? what are the next sreps? Will it remove the message? Or ask for my confirmation for removal first?

I use thunderbird, but always forget to dig through the extensions for anything useful. I will need to check this one out. Not that I have a problem with Phishing e-mails as I can usually identify them.

Do you kow the name of that extension?

Went looking for the name of the extension and then remembered that the newest version of Thunderbird has it built in. So, no need for the extension anymore. Haven't really noticed how Thunderbird is handling it right now, but if I remember correctly, the original extension I used would just add a notice at the top of the email that it was probably a bogus phishing attempt (it used different wording than that of course).

Just wanted to pick up on this post that seems to have been overlooked. Firstly Email phishing filters work in quite a sophisticated way using a set of protocols to flag whether or not the email may indeed be "phishing" you for information. The main ways it does this is to look at links within the email, in outlook for example it was very easy to list a hyperlink as www.yourbank.com but actually have it divert to a URL which only shows an IP address (e.g. http://213.78.131.55/bankupdate) very deceiving for novices. The other way would be for it to scan the email address or key words for tell-tale signs of problems.

What happens when it finds a suspicious email? Well firstly it warns you of this, but then it gives you 2 options. Firstly you can ignore Microsoft and open up the email anyway, the other is to flag it as a phishing email (or a potential threat) and Microsoft will check it out and update the status of this email address (thus flagging it as a confirmed Phishing site and preventing others from viewing it in future). It will never fully restrict you from viewing the email, this is down to you - but they will make it as obvious as possible that you're on the verge of making a BIG mistake.

Hope that helps
