| Vista on Older Hardware After an exhasperating but rewarding learning experience installing Vista Home Basic several times on my old machine I finally was able to do things the right way and it is running fine, thanks, again, to all the help I got in these great forums. Having said that, I have to admit that Vista cannot be my default OS on this system; I have several hard drives, each with a different Operating System, and I swap them out to test and enjoy the various differences. I commited to getting Vista because XP was fine and I expected Vista to be at least as good, and it is! It's better, now that I've gotten to know it, even though I did wonder for a few days.. ........ Xandros Linux wins by a large margine, chiefly because, as with most Linux distributions, it is smaller, faster and far more secure (I have nothing to do with the Xandros company and am not "advertising" for them.. this is merely about my experiences with the two operating systems). This is not a Windows bash! always had a hard drive with a Windows OS on it and I always will, much to the dismay of some zealots in the Linux forums around the 'net. Too bad for them; they are missing out on beautiful, cutting edge technology and the standard setter in computing in the world. Meanwhile, my old machine moves along rather slowly with Vista, and that became dramatic when I put my Xandros (one of the slower Linux distros out there) disk back in yesterday; so I have to stick with it as my default OS, as I say. I'm wondering how many other Vista users around here are also experimenting with or using Linux as your primary OS. -- Jerry |

| Well said, and you are very welcome for any help I have given. I hope that you will continue to use Vista some and to post here regardless. You have Vista learning experiences to share. We would miss you if Linux stole you away completely. Buy a new Vista machine??? Hope so. There are some very inexpensive Vista Premium Ready machines floating around.

not a member of The Church of Linux (I made that up) as so many Linux users are.. I've been fooling with it since way back in '97 when Redhat 5.2 first got my attention.. it's been fun watching Linux grow and evolve over the years; as a matter of fact, the most popular non-free Linux versions have adopted a very "Windows-like" appearance while retaining the Linux stability and security, Xandros and Linspire especially. But, anyway, I need Windows running because the work computers are all Windows and my wife won't switch to Linux so I can't be left in the dark about what is going on in the Windows world; I have to maintain a familiarity with the OS or it's like starting over each time there's a crash or virus to weed out. Once I'm ready to go high-tech and purchase a nice Pentium 4 with a big flat screen and all the other great stuff I'll likely leave Linux behind. Right now it's a necessity on this 900Mhz Celeron antique. -- Jerry | |
