| Use anti virus? Don't go on websites which have viruses? Use javascript disabling tools? You don't state what the virus is, what it does, how you get it, what protection you have etc. Most people who get viruses have left themselves prone in some way and that's probably the thing you should change. crabby |

| Hi Josh: Try Threatfire for an alternative way to deal with evilware.

| Most antivirus programs will automatically rewrite the boot sector when they find the virus. If you reinstalled the os, that may not help unless you format the drive. A good AV is your best way out, otherwise you can use the commands: Bootrec /fixboot Bootrec /fixmbr from the command prompt. crabby |

| They basically writes the boot loader back into the boot sector of the disk. I do not think it will effect the partitions. I have used the command ion the past to rebuilt my boot record after a dual boot set up and it didn't effect my partition. Or wait for Crabby to post to be sure if he has more info on the issue.

| To all intents and purposes your system could appear clean and typically what tends to happen is when you re-boot your Pc the virus is one of the first things that is loaded into system computer memory from where it then runs and creates the damage it was programmed to do. Some people would say that the best way to prevent catching a boot sector virus in the first place is to switch operating systems away from Microsoft Windows. Personally I find this sort of advice quite alarmist. Whilst it could be argued that Windows is the only system which is commonly infected by viruses, changing and learning an entire new operating system is a very long winded and painful way to go, and equally some of your exisitng programs may not run on a different operating system so you may need to re-invest some of your hard earned cash into new software programs.
