Error Code

I tried installing a security update for Excel and it failed, showing Error Code 779. I appears I'm not the only one having this issue. Does anyone here had this issue or know about a fix?

After looking around the net i came across this Felix seems like this was a probelm on Vista RC2 too.

I dont think they have a solution on this site but it gives you the gist of what the problem is.

Thanks Ant. I did see that article, but it seems that there's no fix anywhere. I gather that Microsoft do know about the issue, since it's not new. But why would they continue to put out an update that they know has issues. I've had Office 2003 installed since January; I received the update today. Doesn't make sense.

It's supposed to be an important update and it was published yesterday. What that's telling me that the error code is a general code and not unique to this particular update.

Ok, I downloaded and tried to install the update manually and received the following: "Error 1913. Setup cannot update file C:\Windows\system32\mapisvc.inf. Verify that the file exist in your system and that you have sufficient permission to update it." By the way I tried installing it as administrator but received the same response. I also tried inserting the Office 2003 disc, but that did not work either.

Office 2003 was or should be listed as NOT FULLY COMPATIBLE with VISTA or HAS MAJOR COMPABILITY PROBLEMS... even tho it will work. "Vista Advisor" should have advised you on compatibility problems...with Office 2003.

Office 2007 will not upgrade Office 2003.... Office 2007 will upgrade Office XP.

Office 2003 Professional Edition does not have the "Certified for Windows Vista" logo, but has the "Works with Windows Vista" logo. It works fine with Vista and this is the first update that has not installed or that I have problems with. I did some research and the issue with this update is not unique to Vista, but with Win XP and 2000 as well.
