How to disable the bloody password request over local network

My problem is quite simple: I have 2 PCs connected using a cross-wire ethernet wire. One PC is XP - SP2, the other is Windows Vista.

From the Vista I can access to XP (no problem), but not on the oposite way, since it always ask for a user and password (I don't even know which are the user and password I should use).

I want to give open access to the Vista machine from XP. Anyone knows how to do that?

You will have to go into the Network and Sharing center in Vista and turn of password protection and enable public sharing and see if that does it for you and there is also a protocol for XP systems that allow Vista systems to see then on the view network map but I cannot remember the download.

I can't find the option for disabling the password. I'll try a lot of things, no way.

Public sharing is enabled, but still the bloody password (that I don't even know it).

The network map shows me "Unidentified Network", but I can see the equipments from both machines without any problem.

It is only this point, I don't want any password or, at least, set it up so I know which is the user and password. It is a bit stupid to enable something that I can't use it.

Airman has told you exactly what to do

When you go to the network and sharing center there are options with arrows next to them.

One is enabling password protection. Another is enabling public sharing etc

If you can see them simply disable the password protection.

If these options arent there, use the snipping tool to attach a screenshot of the network and sharing center on your next post

I'm a software developer and I think all developers are experiencing tons of headaches trying to develop and/or port programs onto vista because of all the new security enhancements microsoft put it. At this point we're trying to figure out how to run our own software on vista machines if it was installed by another user.

Anyway, perhaps try this for your issue, it may work, who knows. Set up a local user on your vista box with the same name and password you use on your XP box. It may automatically authenticate for you when you try to access the vista box. Keyword in that statement is 'may'.

If you're currently not using a password on your XP box to log in, that might be something Vista doesn't like since they have tightened up the security on Vista. Which would explain why Vista can access the XP box (it doesn't need a password to do it) and why XP can't access the Vista box (vista requires passwords and permissions for EVERYTHING).

Seems the solution is simple enough: Set one user on Vista. with a common password, then anybody that needs to link to Vista can access with a common password... maybe Guest and Guest would be simple enough to test.
