Also how do you give yourself full administrator privileges? I am the only user on the pc and I log in as administrator yet I am still going told I cannot perform certain actions.

For example I have a USB telephone that I use with a program called Skype. There are no Vista drivers for the USB phone at the moment. However there is a workaround that involves going to an XP machine that has the USB phone installed. You have to copy a file named usbaudio.sys from XP windows/system32/drivers folder and then add it to the Vista windows/system32/drivers folder (replacing the Vista one). The XP bit was ok but in Vista when I try to do that I get told “Destination folder access denied. You need permission to perform this action” I can get into the folder I just can’t make any changes or delete any of the files inside

Also when Vista boots up I get told certain start up programs have been denied access to start. One of them is a realtek ac’97 sound driver? I try to change the permission on this but I can’t. Again I think this is because I don’t have full privileges. Also with some start up programs I have to keep on giving them permission to start up.

It is driving me nuts. So how do I get Vista to stop treating me like an idiot? If I try to open device manager I really do want to open device manager. I don’t need to be asked “are you sure you want to do this”

Welcome to Vista Babble..

Use the Search feature and you will find lots of reading on how to obtain FULL Admin all the time....

Reason: there is more than 1 way to do this...

Welcome enner. We are very glad you are here.

First, disable User Access Control (UAC) by going Control Panel > User Accounts. UAC is a pretty significant security feature that prevents programs from being installed without you being totally aware. I use UAC, and it is just a minor annoyance having become used to it.

Despite logging in being a member of the Administrator Group, you still sometimes may have to give yourself full permissions on folders, etc., and to take ownership of them before you can do desired things. To do both, use (folder) Properties > Security and later (folder) Properties > Security > Advanced.

I tried what you said in relation to taking full control of the folder but I am getting stuck/doing something wrong.

This is what I done. Turn of UAC and reboot PC. Open Windows explorer > navigate to Windows > System32 > Drivers folder > right click on the folder and open up properties > go to security

Then I get a bit stuck. I have 2 listings with my username 1 labeled "Administrators (Wayne-PC\Adminstrators) and 1 labeled "Users (Wayne-PC\Users)" Which one should I choose? Should I click on Edit or Advanced

I have tried a few options and tried to give full control but when I click on apply I first get a warning about making the changes. I then click on yes and then get an error message that says "An error occured when applying security infromation to: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers access is denied" So it basically wont allow me to apply the changes

In relation to ths start up programs I am having trouble with they are listed as start up programs in msconfig. If i turn UAC of they load on start up ok.

It is Windows defender that is blocking them. When I boot the PC up with UAC on I get a box that says windows has blocked some start up programs. If I cick on run blocked progams it says one program called "peer guardian" is blocked and it will allow me to run it. But If I cick on show or remove blocked start up programs the classifcation for peer guardian is permitted? I don't understand why it listed as permitted yet it is listed under run blocked program option?

Also if I click on show or remove blocked start up programs the classifcation for 2 other start up programs (Mailmoa and Realtek Sound Manager) they are listed under classification as "Not Yet Classified" How do I change them to permitted?

Chose the one you are logged on under. Then, change the permissions for that user so that all the check boxes you can check are checked.

You could try logging in as Administrator. Or you could use the Advanced tab and try taking ownership before you give your log in name full permission.

You must, at some point, have prevented (somehow) some programs from starting when Vista starts up. Defender is not blocking anything. Use msconfig to enable start up of all items shown to get over this hump. There really is not problem with the way things are unless you want some things to start up that aren't.

Where do you see "Not Yet Classified?" Not yet classified does not imply that they are not permitted as far as I know.

I think maybe you are trying to solve too many things at once. Let's focus on one thing at a time.

When I boot up the PC and get asked for the password I set I just see icon with my name wayne. When I check user accounts theres only one account and that says Wayne Adminstrator Password protected.

So I assume from that when I try to make the changes I should be choosing Wayne-PC\Adminstrators? I will have another go at it now

It seems to me that your check boxes for changing permissions are missing. And, did you click Owner to get the Advanced-tab result you show. You should click owner to take ownership.

By Default the only user is yes, Admin, but also a standard user.
If you want full admin all the time... several ways to do this...
I simply use "switch user" and login as "ADMIN" not me.. and everything is different...

Step 2. start -> cmd (run as admin) -> type takeown /?
That is the easy way if you know DOS...

If that does not work: Try this:

1) Click START
2) Type: cmd
3) Right click cmd, click Run As Administrator
4) Type: net user administrator /active:yes
5) Press enter
