UAC Question..

Ok.. I run in admin mode.. I have a tendency to let people use my comps now and then..Is there anyway in admin mode I can make it ask for a Password before something gets installed.. On my macs, thats mandatory.. I do see that I can set up a user account that does this.. But can it be done in admin mode? Just so a stupid or drunk friend while using my PC does not d/l malware by mistake and when Vista says-- Do you want to Install? They actually can! I feel the admin mode on Vista should ask for a password.. Thanks

Only way I know how is to run in Standard User mode. My account (Mitch) is Standard and my other account (Midway) is Admin. I mainly run in a standard account and have an admin account as well though I very rarely go into it. Whenever I need to install a program or change system settings the UAC window comes up and I have to enter Midway's password. It works just like it does in Linux.

Most Windows users will be annoyed by this setup but if you spent any time in Linux you already used to it and appreciate it's security.

Ahh, That's what I figured.. I'll set up a standard account if I lend the Dell out for a day or two. I'm just used to OSX still wanting a p/w even in admin.. Seems to be less worries there. If you screw something up--- It is your fault! lol...

Midway is right on both points; create a standard account, if not yet created and although the 'Permission' pop up can be a hassle sometimes, most people get used to it with time.

The biggest hassle comes when setting up a new PC where one might be asked for administrative rights 40 or more times during the setup process. In that case, it's easier just to run the PC as administrator until the PC setup has been completed. But after that, it's worth to run the PC under a standard account...just make sure your administrative account is password protected.
