Vista Security: What are You Using?

Hi Friends:

We have been at the Vista thing for quite a while now. I am wondering what everyone has settled on security-wise. Here is what I am doing:

Laptop:

Vista Firewall when out and and about (incoming only)/Router firewall otherwise
Public Network when out and about/Private network otherwise
Ad-Aware SE Plus, including real-time monitoring (only web activities)
UAC on full blast
Avast Home (free)
Common sense on ( )

Desktop:

Router firewall
Private network
Ad-Aware SE Plus, including real-time monitoring (only web activities)
UAC on full blast
Nod32 (free) on 64-bit/Avast Home (free) on 32-bit
Common sense on ( )

Hi Znod, very interesting thread I'll give you my list.
Laptop:

Avast Home Edition (32-Bit)
UAC (Even though I hate it but it is better to be safe than sorry)
Windows Firewall
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Ad-Aware 2007 Beta Six
Spybot - Search & Destroy
Advanced WindowsCare Personal V2 Beta 3

I did have Norton Internet Security 2007 with a 90 Day Subscription that came with my laptop but after running LiveUpdate and install updates, Norton fails to load and was completely unusable and after reformatting the HDD 3 times and start Norton again it works until LiveUpdate installed updates.

I may get Norton 360, I have good things about it and I won't to have all these security programs but I really care for my laptop, I still have the plastic protective cover on the front of my laptop after having it 3 months!

Norton Internet Security '07
UAC
Standard User

I am going to try this without an antispyware program for a while. Norton has a good malware detection rate anyway. After a couple of months I will install a dedicated A/S program and look at the results.

Mid just use Defender, its built in with vista so it might be worth keeping that on.

I was just in a discussion about this over on Wilder's Security forum. Someone posted a link to a AV test on PC World (performed by AV-test.org). Upon reading Norton's review (which came in 2nd under KAV) it states this:

Quote:
During our design tests on Windows Vista Ultimate, the program turned off the built-in Windows Defender antispyware utility without notice. This is not because the utility conflicts, according to the company, but because Symantec feels "Windows Defender offers no value beyond what Norton offers." BitDefender Antivirus 10 was the only other program we tested that disables Defender when it installs.
[Trend Micro also disabled WinDefender when I tried it too]

I did not notice that Norton did this until SecCenter reported that Norton was handling malware/spyware. I looked into process viewer and sure enough WD was disabled.

But really I do not care about WD. It's detection rate is lackluster and I would rather trust Norton with that job than it.

AVG 7.5
Ad-Aware
Spybot S&D
Vista firewall ( until ZA gets up)

( I removed Mcafee, which came installed on my system, slow and clunky not to mention browser problems. Since removal -- system is humming right along)

Off topic ---- but has anyone noticed the bad mouthing going on regarding Vista? Being referred to around the net as "Windows ME II". I googled "Vista failure" this morning --- Wow , lots of disgruntled folks. I like mine !!

I have seen some articles like that DaBear and my veiw is that Vista has some teething problems i admit, but not a chance is it ME number two. I could never go back to XP because Vista is just so brilliant at helping me find my files quicker and organizing my files is a doodle with the new user directory. Vista cant fail for the simple reason its better than XP, Definitely more secure, usable and it has a modern feel to it. The sales figures for Vista have been better than XP's early days to check out this post on my blog http://essentialvista.wordpress.com/...sales-figures/

I dont know what all the comotions about, i love vista most problems with vista are due to people using old software and drivers. Personally i have never had a major problem with vista...well atleast not as bad as the ones with XP (blue screen of death ect.)
