| More Problems with IE7 I recently (end of January '08) purchased a Gateway laptop with Vista Home Premium (32 Bit) OS. I started having problems with internet connection to the point where I had the system re-install itself from the beginning (and maybe I didn't need to do that - I thought I had messed up the system by installing/uninstalling some programs - Word 07, etc.). After I had the system reinstall itself, things were fine again for a short time. I'm not even sure I can explain the problem! It seems that I can either work with e-mail or work with the Internet, but not both at the same time. I'll be in e-mail, receiving/connected just fine, then click on a link to the internet (within an email) and it goes to the browser window, says "connecting" and I get what I call the "wheel of death" - the little Vista circle that just sits there spinning. Then when I try to access the Internet from the shortcut on the desktop I still get the same thing. Then I try to go back to e-mail and it is no longer working! I close out everything, shut down the connection, restart the computer, and then I can (maybe) get into IE. I have re-set IE7 several times and this clears the problem for a short time but it keeps coming back. I uninstalled Norton and am running Avast now, having read in several posts here that Norton doesn't work well with Vista. When IE7 reports that is is not responding, the error report that comes up says "rundll32" is not working or "Win 32" is not working. Not being that computer tech I have no idea what this means. Other info that may be helpful is that I'm on a dial up connection, and my ISP assures me that it isn't something on their end. We have an HP Pavilion computer that uses the same dial up and we do not have the same IE7 problems with the HP that I'm having with the laptop. I'm hoping someone can offer some suggestions here - I've searched the previous threads and haven't come across anything that seems to answer this question. Thanks in advance, everyone! |

| try turning off your phishing filter by click internet explorer , tools, turnoff phishing filter which may help but I remember the days of dial-up with XP and I am so glad i have broadband. There are some other connection protocol you can turn off that is not used by dial-up but I cannot find the procedures to do it right now will look for it and post if I find.

| I would do a virus scan because win 32 can be a virus in certain instances according to google and an ad ware scan to make sure there is no problems there and delete cookie in IE7 and Temp Internet files and cache to see if that helps and also do a system file check by opening run from the start menu and typing in sfc /scannow and have you install disc ready you might need it this will repair any file errors.

I've just e-mailed Gateway technical support because I'm getting more than just a little frustrated with this. Now I hope I'm not going to sound a little dumb here. The "install disc" that you refer to, Airman - I have the Operating System Disc that came with the machine ... but that wipes out everything and starts from factory fresh. Is that the disc you refer to? Thanks for all your suggestions. | |

| Yes that is the disc but it may or may not need that disc if you do the file repair with scannow. Is the disc you have a restore disc not a full OEM or retail disc like you would buy from a computer store. I am not that familiar with the store bought systems like Dell and the such i have always build my own desktops and do not have a lappy yet. I would think it works you said until you booted back up so what changed from shutdown to boot back up that is someplace to start. If you have a complete install disc you could still do a repair install and not lose any information but it is still good to back up any important info before hand. Plus compare you setting between the two systems and see if anything in IE7 is set different on the one system then the other.

| Update: I have "fired" IE7 and have installed Firefox 2.0 instead. And things seem to be working (cross your fingers, hold your breath, stand on one foot, all those things that will help keep it working!) I tried the sfc /scannow and got a black screen where it "verified" something, then that shut down and nothing else, so I'm guessing nothing was wrong? At any rate, I received a response from Gateway who referred me to a technical bulletin that listed what steps I should take ... and I had already taken them all (and told them so) so wrote a not so nice reply informing them of this and also informing that I will not ever purchase another Gateway product. So far I'm liking Mozilla and like I said, am keeping my fingers crossed! I also uninstalled the google toolbar and napster (never use it, don't really know what it is). Thanks again for all your suggestions. ![]() |

| You are very welcome for my small part. FF is good; you will like it assuming your problem does not reappear.
