She put a new password in to keep her kids from using computer while she was gone on a weekend trip. She didn not make a back up, and now she has forgotten the password, so she doesnt know what to do. Please help if you can. What are her options? THANKS |

| It is difficult to retrieve a forgotten password if you have not made a password reset disk, but here are a couple of steps you can follow to regain control of your PC. Turn on your friends PC and start the machine in safe mode by pressing F8 JUST BEFORE WINDOWS BOOTS When the logon welcome screen appears you should see 2 user accounts, the admin account and the user account which you can't access Logon to the Administrators account you won't need a password. If you need files from the user account, make a backup of them to a portable storage device, to access the files you need to go to the directory (folder path) C:\Users\*account user name*\ and copy the files to a portable storage device. Once you have done this, go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts Go to manage another account and click on the user account link. In there it should say 'reset password for this user account' or something or other, please note this will delete all of the encypted files on that user account so make sure you back up. Hope this helps. |

| I don't think so you could do it with Vista, but of course XP can, I do it all the time. |
