Run - Save

OK, maybe this question does not belong here.

But it is a real basic question. When downloading something. Sometimes a dialog box comes up and asks: Run or Save.

What does this mean? What is the difference?

Rusty:

If you select Save - the application is downloaded and stored on your disk. It then has to be opened/executed from the disk.

If you select Run - the application is executed from the network source and never downloaded to your disk.

Downsides to Run - You have to go back to the source to install it again AND the version you need is no longer available. If you download it to your disk, you can run a virus checker on the software before you install it.

Run is downloaded... and if small enough is actually kept in your temporary internet files... atleast it used to be? :scared:

Otherwise I agree with your differences

i allways click save to make sure, because run is store in temp its likely to get deleted sooner or later. Plus if you click save you can choose the destination and delete the file when you are sure you don't need it and you know exactly were its located.

I recommend "Save" for security reasons and because one can specify where the setup file will go to, e.g Downloads, Documents, New Folder, Desktop. Saving the file in your PC allows you to burn it to CD/DVD or store it on a USB drive or other media for future use.

As mentioned previously, if you choose "Run" the setup process begins once the file is downloaded to the temporary Internet file. Once you empty your temp file, the download gets deleted. By the way, you should empty your temp file often or it can get full with temp files.

When using Win XP, I create a folder on my Desktop and download the program there. With Vista, the built-in Download folder has worked just fine.

One more thing, when downloading and "saving" the file, it's always a good idea to give the program a meaningful name. For example, if you download a driver for your ATI card, name the file ATI Driver. This will make finding your file much easier later on.
