According to Western Digital...there was NO difference in performance between 16 mb and 32.

Ouch! $300!!, well I hope they come down a bit before I'm overwhelmed by the urge to buy one (I have the 150GB Raptor and luv it!). More storage, more speed and it's quieter - noice!

I'm looking at the pictures; does it have a clear top to it?

Re: 300 GB Velociraptor in Stock...Finally!

From what I have read...No clear top. That was a gimmick that WD did with the Raptor X, and supposedly it shortened the life of the drive. I am happy with the closed disk and all that speed. Just wish I had enough now to get two and RAID immediately...but even without...this drive is gonna be hella fast I am actually contemplating keeping one of my old Raptors in and doing a dual boot. XP Pro on the old drive and Vista on the Velociraptor...I will see what I will do once it arrives in the morning

Why would the life (# of hours) go significantly down with the clear top?

Re: 300 GB Velociraptor in Stock...Finally!

Thanks bobmitch,

I'm down for one after I get a new ATI video card. The price is what was expected. SSD's are making a showing but I will use the VelociRaptor for a year or so before I get an SSD and make the Raptor a secondary drive. Intel is suppose to have some nice SSD's by the end of the year.

when they make a 500GB Raptor drive, I'll be first in line...until then 300GB is not enough storage space for me

at least their making strides...150GB...now 300GB...500GB should be out by 2010

Re: 300 GB Velociraptor in Stock...Finally!

All I have are my 74's still As I recall they were around $200 a piece so $100 more for 4 times the space doesn't sound so bad. Actually with 2 (74's) in RAID0 I haven't had storage problems. It's my data drives that are getting full!

Re: 300 GB Velociraptor in Stock...Finally!

Here are the first benchmarks for the VelociRaptor. It is actually faster as a single drive than my two 74 GB Raptors were in RAID 0. I am very impressed. I can't even imagine what two of these in RAID 0 will do...but hopefully down the road...I will get another and find out...

Nice Drive!!!!

Re: 300 GB Velociraptor in Stock...Finally!

My new VelociRaptor arrived Tuesday morning Unfortunately won't be installing it until the new motherboard arrives, so can't run any benchmarks yet, or to see how quiet it really is, even though have two types of mounts to use to reduce the noise if needed
