| cant boot from a sata hard drive i have an IDE and a SATA hard drive in my pc. i can boot on the ide and use the sata drive in windows like normal. when i try to install xp on the SATA and boot, it says error loading os. thats the same as invalid boot disk, its just been renamed in my motherboards bios. i can boot from a cd to load windows xp. in xp setup i can install windows onto that sata drive, BUT. when it restarts to load the operating system, it says error loading os like i said above. basically the drive works like normal unless i try to boot the operating system from it. asus a8n sli delux, bios 1006. 64bit winchester 3000+ gainward 1780 pcx gf6600 giel value 1g dual channel ram ati tv wonder ve maxtor ide 200gb maxtor sata 120gb lg dual layer dvdrw |

| Disconnect the IDE drive from the MB (or just pull the molex power cord from the drive) before you install Windows. Afrter you install Windows on the SATA drvie and it has booted successfully from that drive, reconnect the IDE drive and you should be fine. If you have an IDE drive attached to the system when you do the Windows install, that's what will typically happen. |

| also you may need to flash the bios to a newer version. Don't forget to check the boot order in the BIOS: SCSI or SATA before IDE, or remove the IDE from the list entirely...

| Your SATA controller may need its own drivers. I'm more familair with Intel setups. On those, you're OK to install on an ICH5R without drivers, but if you have a 3rd party controller by Promise or VIA you have to load the drivers even if you're not using RAID. To load the drivers on Windows install, press F6 at the prompt and have a floppy with the drivers ready. |

I was restoring a backup image onto a SATA drive today and I pulled the power plug from the PATA drive as I going to be removing and connecting the PATA drive a few times and I felt it would be easier on the drive to have the Power plug disconnected and connected a few times rathere than the PATA data cable. But I found that when the power plug of the PATA drive was removed whilst the data cable was connected the system was still seeing a drive attached and possibly this was like a defective drive being present on the system as it would lock up. Is this normal ??

| I think that is normal. I always disconnect the ribbon from the motherboard.

FWIW - I have a PATA as well as a SATA running at the moment - I have XP installed on both and the Boot.ini file is identical on each drive. I installed XP on each drive when it was the only drive attached to the system. Both these boot.ini files are exactly the same as Bofinn's.
