Question CD and writer not responding?

I not sure why there not showing up on my system. I made one the master and the other the slave but when i start up winXP i can see it looking for IDE drive and then say None. But sometimes if i restart it will find them and they will work fine. Before i thought i put the wrong ribbon end on the wrong master / slave drive so i change the master/slave setting on them both but still i get the problem. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Are you using an 80 pin ribbon or 40? And try reseating them both, like Clees said.

Make sure the power cable assembly is seated well. I've had some that are very tight and you think they feel tight, but they aren't even in all the way. Double check them. If its "right on the edge" it could be powered sometimes and not powered sometimes.

I had a similar problem a while ago. First I would check the cable connections again like KingTermite stated. I solved my problem by removing the drive from my Device Manager once Windows detected it and restarted the computer. After that it was recognized properly and I havn't had any problems since.

yup power is on there tight as can be even the drive blink at start up. The only thing i did with the power that is not exaclty right is the power strip that goes to 2 CD-rom and 1 floppy altogether is not used for that cause cords where to short to reach so i used another set but its the same power going in so i dont think that could be it. It showed up once and then not at all im thinking either not enough power cause i have a 350W or the IDE on the board is dead. Is there a way i can test the ide channel?

I was just thinking about that. Maybe your PSU is not enough for all your stuff. Do you have other rigs or PSUs or anything you can test it with?

I dont think i have to much going on in terms of needing more power but you tell me...I have a 350W and im running a gigabyte board GA-8SG667, P4 2.4, 2 X 512mb corsair pc3200 XMS, a CDwriter and a dvd drive. a 80gig HD western digital 8mb buffer, a floppy drive. Geforce 3 Ti200, Nic card, sound card, and 3 system fans all 4 pin hook up.
I was going to get a 400-500W power supply today but didnt want to get it not have it help..kinda like a last resort kinda move.

Hmm, sounds like you should have plenty of power for the current setup, since you're not really running anything too exotic. Try swapping your chains (i.e., put CDROMS on IDE0, and out HD's on IDE1, it will still detect everything fine).

If the problem is still exhibited, it's the CDROM's. (one of them anyways).

Give it a shot! but I personally doubt a lack of power

Are you sure you have the jumpers on the back of the drives set correctly?

Yup one the master the other is slave i even change it around so the other was the master and the other was the slave still nothing. I even tried new cables still the same. Ill try having only one CD drive hooked up and see what that gives me. Thank again guys for all your input and time for helping me.

Try switching your connection if the secondary connection that you have does not work.

Install your CD-RW as 'slave' with your HDD in the primary port;make sure the jumper is correctly placed with your HDD as 'master'

Leave your CD-ROM only in the secondary port as 'master'

Re-boot and see what happens!

Welcome!
