Maybe this info will help.

Well, I think that most packet writing program just can not work properly in W2K yet, at this time. Only InCD has upgrade. If you use InCD below version 2.0, you just cannot burn CDRW in W2K. Latest InCD 2.11 grab it here:
1) ftp://ftp2.nero.com/InCD211up.exe or
2) ftp://ftp.nero.com/InCD211up.exe or
3) ftp://mirrors.fixel.net/pub/mirrors/.../InCD211up.exe

If you format CDRW media withInCD and use Ahead/Nero InCD to copy files into CDRW media, then if you want to read it on other computer which do not have InCD software, you have to install UDF reader.

Download the latest InCD UDF Reader Version 1.04 here:
1) ftp://ftp2.nero.com/InCDUDFReader.exe or
2) ftp://ftp.nero.com/InCDUDFReader.exe

--------------------------------------------------------
This is from Intel web: When installing the IntelŪ Ultra ATA Storage Driver after Easy CD Creator* version 4.02c_s10 on systems with Windows* 2000 installed, the system will fail to complete installation of the Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver resulting in a blue screen error. Following this condition, the system will not be bootable and will report an 'Inaccessible Boot Device' error at each subsequent reboot.

Resolution
This issue can be prevented by first upgrading to version 4.02e (or newer version) of Easy CD Creator before installing the Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver. Version 4.02e of Easy CD Creator can be obtained from the following Roxio* (now a subsidiary of Adaptec,* Inc.) website: http://www.roxio.com
--------------------------------------------------------
Link: http://support.intel.com/support/chi...ATA/tti007.htm

Info on latest Adaptec Easy CD Creator:
--------------------------------------------------
EzCD Creator update to v5.01
What's New:
- Fixes "blue screen crash" reported by some Windows 2000 users.
- Supports more recorders
Grab it here: ftp://ftp.roxio.com/roxio/cd_recordi...dc_v501_up.exe

Also do not use Norton Speed Disk with Intel ATA Driver. It will ruin windows registry. It happens to my system. All this info can be found here: http://support.intel.com/support/chi...vers/ultraATA/

As a rule of thumb, do not install 2 different packet writing & burning softwares, especially you got error
by installing InCD & Nero combining with Direct CD &
Easy CD Creator.
I am very sure that the problem with your system is not mobo and cdrw, but rather it is OS and drivers problems. For JB who claimed that he has installed this same burner on friends computers running the same software but different motherboards and never had a problem, I want to ask what OS is being used there? So the problem is not on ASUS nor is it on Plextor, but rather on OS & driver related problems on W2K. You know that W2K screw up most of the time when it was released first time, that's why I don't upgrade to W2K. Too much trouble for CDRW Programs + Games. Here's list of W2K bugs: http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q259/5/24.asp
You must install SP1.

Some of bugs being fixed by Intel ATA Driver v6.10.006 Beta Candidate 2.0:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Bug check occurs during boot with Plextor* software installed on system with no drives attached to IDE channel - Windows 2000
2. Resume from Standby mode results in "Inaccessible Boot Device" blue screen error with some device configurations - Windows 2000
3. "Inaccessible Boot Device" blue screen error occurs if UDMA3 or UDMA4 are selected in IntelŪ Ultra ATA Companion for devices using 40-pin 40-conductor cable.
Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000
4. CloneCD* software fails to record successfully. Windows 2000
5. Device Manager for Microsoft operating systems reports IDE devices as SCSI - Windows 2000
6. Reinstalling Windows 2000 on top of itself with the Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver installed results in "Inaccessible Boot Device" blue screen error - Windows 2000
7. ATAPI drives write in PIO mode but read in UDMA mode.
Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000
8. When booting from SCSI hard drives, devices attached to the secondary controller are not available - Windows 2000
9. Incompatibility issues with Plextor* Manager 2000 Windows - 2000

Grab Official Intel ATA Guide:

Why you should upgrade to beta2? Here's the reason from Radified: There is a newer Beta version of the Intel(R) Ultra ATA Storage Driver available, Beta2, on the Intel web site HERE. We believe that any remaining CD-RW incompatibility issues have been resolved, most notably with CloneCD. There were also several minor fixes. Please see the release notes for more details.
I installed that Intel 6.10 beta2 drivers last night .. to both WinME & W2K (created images first). They work god for me. All the problems I previously had with them disappeared. I can now boot to W2K with getting that error that says STOP: 0x000000D1 DRIVER_IRQL_NOT LESS_OR_EQUAL (see here for more on this from MS). I also get normal CPU utilization readings from HD Tach in WinME. Link: http://radified.com/CUSL2/cusl2a.htm

Well, as of by now you should uninstall the older driver and install the latest Official Intel Ultra ATA Driver version 6.10.011 Production Version FINAL

Overall W2K tips: http://www.rojakpot.com/Other_Articl...Win2k_Tips.htm

Overall WinME Tips:
http://www.members.accessus.net/~090/awh/winmetip.html

I have Plextor 12/10/32A since August 2000 & been
running it with Nero 5.0.4.4 under Win98SE & WinME
without any problems at all. You should install Intel Inf software with Win98SE. ME has its own driver built in. The only problem I got is when installing Intel Ultra ATA driver & combining it with any packet writing software. I just don't install the packet writing (InCD) because I'm running Intel ATA Driver v6.10.006 Beta Candidate 2.0. Or you can do vice versa, by not installing Intel ATA Driverm but running packet writing software. The things that I know exactly are running smoothly together on Win98SE & ME are: Nero 5.0.4.4 + InCD (no Intel ATA Driver for InCD), Feurio, WinOnCD 3.7 or 3.8, AudioCatalyst, AudioGrabber, CloneCD. AudioCatalyst uses engine from AudioGrabber.

My installation is (CUSL2, BIOS 1006A, WinME, 256MB Mushkin Rev2, IPanel Basic):
CDRW: Plextor 12/10/32A on secondary master on CUSL2 IDE
CDROM: Asus 50x on secondary master on Winfast ATA 100 Card
HDD:
- Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 46 GB ATA 100 7200RPM on primary master on CUSL2 IDE
- Quantum FireBall LM 30 GB ATA 66 7200 RPM on primary master on Winfast ATA 100 Card
ATA PCI Card: Winfast Ultra ATA 100 on slot 2

The reason: I want every drive to be independent, thus reducing cpu time, and faster access. Also, IDE design has limitation in that it can not do parallel tasks. Thus, if you combine ATA 100 device as primary master with ATA 66 device as secondary master (on the same IDE socket), it will see only ATA 66. It's just like SDRAM PC133 used on Asus P3BF mobo (only PC100 compliant) that will work only @100 MHz. Currently, I install them all using 80 pin cable ATA 100. On every drive. I choose Cable Select on all jumper. It will be detected automatically by your ATA 100 cable. Make sure it's working in BIOS. Btw, it's OK to intall it using regular 40 pin ATA 33 cable & it's fine to select every drive as master / slave on the jumper. I've tried them all. Works smooth. Also, always try to install CDRW as master on secondary IDE. It's faster & stable most of the time. Try to install the other CDROM on different IDE. If you install CDROM under the same IDE as CDRW, you will not be able to copy CD to CD. It is OK if Bios detected the name of the maker (Asus, Maxtor, etc). Just press it & choose Auto, it'll detect automatically & give you the complete name & type. To detect the CDR/CDRW media maker, type, & other info, use CDR Identifier.

It is better to install ASPI layer for burning CD. The ASPI layer that ships with Win9x/ME
is an old implementation from Adaptec and only works with SCSI drives (Thereīs a possibility to make it work with IDE drives, but I would not recommend doing that!) If youīve got an IDE recorder connected to your
Win95/98-System you should try to upgrade to a newer ASPI manager from Tekramīs website
http://support.tekramusa.com/support...E?openDocument
or: from Adaptecīs website
http://www.adaptec.com/support/overv...4x.html#aspi32 which supports IDE drives!

Using Nero:
-----------------
Nero is the best Burning Software, much better than Adaptec Easy CD Creator, although the latter has fancier appearance. Using Nero in W2K, if it crash here's the info: in Windows 2000 (crash while booting) -
If you are using the Nero version 4.0.7.8 or a previous version, then the problem is:
Only Nero 4.0.8.3 works with Windows 2000.
If you use Nero 4.0.8.3 and have updated from a previous Nero version, then the old Nero drivers were not replaced by the files written for Windows 2000.
Please install the most up-to-date Nero version as in this version the drive which causes error is removed.

I also always rename these drivers: NECATAPI.VXD (Driver for older NEC CDROM drives. This
driver sometimes causes buffer underruns), ATAPCHNG.VXD, NECCHG.VXD (if any), TORISAN3.VXD, ALPS4.VXD (if any) Windows drivers. These drivers are needed for CD changers. In connection with WinOnCD and Nero these drivers can cause problems. Also this Adaptec driver must be rename: CDR4VSD.VXD , CDUDFRW.VXD , CDUDF.VXD , CDRPWD.VXD

Do Please not change the name itself but the name extension, change .VXD , e.g.: to .VX_
These drivers can be found in the Windows\System\IOSUBS directory.

Do not install Iomega support drive (unless using it, but it will conflict with Nero & other Burning Softwares) & do not install Adaptec CD Burning add-in on Windows Media Player 7.

Also, SCSI1HLP.VXD Windows 95/98 Is required to play VideoCDs by IDE-CD-ROM devices. Causes conflicts with the Adaptec driver CDR4VSD.VXD

All these info can be found in Nero's HelpTool, download it at: ftp://ftp.nero.com/helptoolen.exe

With W2K, you must install latest Nero ASPI driver (for Windows 2000). Just copy this file in the Nero folder.
Version: 2.0.1.16 included in Nero 5.0.2.4 download at:
ftp://ftp.nero.com/wnaspi32.dll

Currently, Plextor is the BEST CDROM & CDRW
To Hardware Overclock Plextor Based Engine:
------------------------------------------
TDK 12/10/32 is using Plextor as basic engine and that by inserting a jumper to the connector just besides (on the left edge) digital audio connector (PLEXTOR UDMA-2 JUMPER SETTING), you will "hardware overclocking" and turn your Plextor engine from PIO 4 to UDMA 2 (or ATA 33). This will increase speed & boost for read/write and decrease cpu usage when burning. This also applies to the latest Plextor 16/10/40. This method also will Enable SubChannel Data reading in PLEXTOR/CREATIVE/TDK/IOMEGA 12/10/32 CDR-W drives

I installed a new plextor 16/10/40, and have been unable to get it to work with the Intel ADA drivers, but that discussion is in another forum. The question I have is you recommend the burner be on the master/secondary IDE, and the other CD be on the slave/primary IDE. On my box, the distance between the hard drives and the mounting area for CD-rom is farther than the length between the connectors on the IDE ribbon. So how do you get around that?

I'm about to buy a plextor 16/10/?? and the Nero software. I can't seem to find much info on the nero site, is it 2000 compatible, or do I need to download that patch thingy?

leecarter,

Most of the time it is. And even when it's not, you still get that nasty bend in the 80-wire cable because the slave HAS to be connected to the middle (gray) connector. One work around is the get a removable H.D.D. rack that fits into one of your 5.25" bays. Place that thing way at the top and place it's slave (cd-rom) just below it. Be sure the removable rack is ATA/100. Another solution is to purchase a Promise ATA/100 controller card which gives you two more channels. Then you can separate everything if you choose and/or are hurting for bays.

Cool

I have written about ATA setting and it is like a manual (long), but its seems that this new forum still has a looooooots of buuuuggggs because it uses STUPID server. It happens to me many times. So after I send it by replying to this forum, it's gone. It took me about 45 minutes to write it and I just give up until this new forum has better server or the php bugs have been fixed.................................

Thrakhath, the latest Nero 5.0.4.4 & InCD 2.0 and above is W2K compatible. Just put latest Nero driver (for Windows 2000) & copy this file in the Nero folder.
The Nero driver for W2K is version: 2.0.1.16 and is already included in Nero 5.0.2.4

leecarter, just do not install the Intel ATA driver, because up until the latest driver (even the beta2), it will bring more sorrow to CDRW users than enjoyment. As you can see in the manual, Plextor recommends that you install the Plexwriter CDRW as a Master. I experience it better transfer & less problem installing it as Master. To overcome your problem when isntalling the main HDD, then you have to buy a bracket or some sort of converter/rack that fits in the 5.25" bay. Just install your HDD using that bracket/converter/rack, so that you can install the HDD & CDROM in one same line of cable. I did that also to my computer, because it won't fit also.

See the PLEXTOR technical support here:

http://www.plextor.com/english/suppo...hnical.html#ME

If your Plextor Manager 2000 causes your system to crash
Try the no 10 in tech support: Please make sure you are using the latest version of Plextor Manager 2000. http://www.plextor.com/english/suppo...ft_pm2000.html

Also verify that your system ASPI layer is up to date and working (use aspichk.exe from Adaptec's web site: http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/sup...ey=aspichk.exe ) and make sure that you have only one copy of mfc42.dll in your windows\system folder. Any copies in other locations on your hard disk should be renamed.

The most recent ASPI layer is 4.60(1021). If you do not have the latest version, you can download and install aspi32.exe from the Adaptec web site. We know that Adaptec's web site warns against installing the ASPI checker or the ASPI layer with Windows ME or 2000. Do it anyway. It will work fine with your Plextor drive.
Get the latest ASPI driver: http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/sup...key=aspi32.exe
